(This event is listed on the BMG calendar and is cross posted at Mass Revolution Now!)
The Progressive Democrats of Somerville (PDS) are hosting a forum on the city of Somerville budget. Inspired by the way the city of Lawrence has organized its citizenry to become better informed and armed with knowledge, a group of folks involved with PDS have put together a very exciting, non-partisan event to do the same for the folks of Somerville. The event will be on Thursday, June 29 from 7-9 p.m. (there will be refreshments at 6:30 so come on down and meet some neighbors) at the Visting Nurses Association (259 Lowell St.) in Somerville. We will try and wrap things up to make sure everyone catches the Somerville fireworks (I hear this is the biggest year ever).
This event, however, doesn’t pertain only to Somerville. While we are using the Somerville budget as our guidepost we are also talking in general terms about some very key questions which surround any budget, namely:
1. What is a budget?
2. Where does the money come from?
3. What does the money pay for?
4. Who decides how to spend the money?
5. How can I get involved?
6. Can we do more?
We have lined up some very knowledgable speakers who are going to be exciting (yes, even about budget stuff!). My favorite part of the whole forum will be the jelly beans! First, you have to love any opportunity to play with jelly beans, and second, you really have to love any opportunity to take something as complicated as a budget and explain it in terms of candy! Come see how we are going to do it. The details again:
What: Somerville Budget Basics sponsored by the Progressive Democrats of Somerville
When: Thursday, June 29 7-9 p.m.
Where: Visiting Nurses Association (VNA, 259 Lowell Street, Somerville)
If anyone has any questions drop me a note: andy AT massrevolutionnow DOT com (you know to replace what you need with what you need).
Ah, this will be a new experience for Somerville, indeed!
We’s gonna brawl! You keep slammin’ the glamorous Somerville and I am sensitive! We know right where the money is, for instance we know we have about 30 grand in a landfill somewhere. We put it there for same keeping. đŸ˜‰
Thanks for the heads-up, Andy!

I hope it won’t be those Jelly-Belly beans that Reagan liked so much….my brother always sends those for Christmas, and they have peanut butter ones. I’m allergic….

Maybe the point is not eating them, though.
No, but is that what they’ll be teaching at the Forum? đŸ™‚
I appreciate the front page treatment! This event should really be very informative, and as I mentioned in the post, it isn’t exclusively a Somerville event per se. People in every city and town should be taking responsibility for the decisions made in their budgets. At the Sirota event last night he reminded us that the best way to combat the hostile takeover of our government is by starting the fight on the local level, nipping it in the bud early on. Sadly, I can’t go to the event (it was scheduled for an earlier date) because I will be milking cows. But I hope the turn out is huge!
I hope many of you Blues will come to this event. All our PDS meetings are fun and interesting, even those on budgets! Plus as a special bonus, immediately following you can see FIREWORKS! You can’t beat that! Plus we have good snacks.
