My second guest-post at Liberal Oasis is up, again about the Dems and Iraq. Perhaps I’m being Pollyanna-ish, but I do think the Dems are starting to stumble towards some common ground here.

Sadly, I think the hard truth is that the Democrats are all over the map on Iraq, and therefore will not garner much support. The leading candidate for nominee (God help us) wants to stay the course. The tragically flawed last nominee (a big flaw being his non-position on Iraq) wants to set an arbitrary date. Pretty big gap. For an opposition party to be effective it must be disciplined and focused. The leading Democrats should hammer out a compromise alternative to Bush’s rigid good-money-after-bad then stick to it up and down the line. What we should be doing here is offering some suggestions. I made a few recently: (1) build up local authority by turning over ownership of the oil industry to 100% Iraqi-owned companies (let’s make some local millionaires who will fight on our side) and (2) end plans to build permament bases (unrealistic and inflammatory). Politically, a focus on those two points will help expose the real reasons the Republicans went to Iraq: oil, and empire.
