Allow me the liberty to improve upon an already great site..
I’ve created a favicon for BMG based on the logo above. Since the favicon is 16 by 16 pixels, it cannot be too complicated so I simplified the logo then shrunk it down to the proper size.
Here it is:
To make the favicon show up on your favorits bar, the administrator has do do a simple HTML trick.
Administrator: First take the mini-logo and put it where ever you store BMG images (it’s a JPG file)
Then, add the following line of code to the page template (put it before the “head” tag):
<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”image URL” type=”image/x-icon”/> (BTW, I see in the site’s coding, a reference to a favicon, so you already know about this trick)
Once the administrator has done his or her trick, then all users should re-bookmark BMG and the favicon will show up on your favorites toolbar.
Best,
Mark
You are absolutely right, er, left. I’ve sent your most excellent favicon to the site administrator at soapblox.

Have a great weekend.
It’s a slow day today…

I had been idly wondering how people get those nifty icons (didn’t even know they had a name) up in the menu bar, but hadn’t bothered to do anything about it.
Thanks. Way cool.

Thanks again for creating the icon, and for telling us how to install it. Actually, I didn’t put the code exactly where you said since I don’t have access to that part of the html, but apparently the spot I chose worked.
I had been thinking about this, but hadn’t bothered to diary about it — and I certainly wouldn’t have created one. So, major kudos to you.

On a side note, I’m a big fan of meta-BMG diaries; that is, diaries about BMG itself, not about the topics BMG discusses. This reflection helps improve user experience, and I think it’s important for users like us to give feedback. So, well done again.
So, here’s two ways you might make the icon a bit better:

1. Use a transparent background instead of a white one. It makes the icon look much slicker when highlighted or otherwise cast on a non-white background.

2. Maybe make the blue a hair darker. I know it was chosen to match the site, but in other contexts (like an RSS reader, cough cough) it’s a bit light.
