The ward committee endorsed Silbert for her strong progressive values and her impressive capability to turn her vision for positive change into reality, as evidenced by her work in founding the Center for Women and Enterprise, now one of the most highly regarded non-profits for entrepreneurship training and jobs creation in the country. Lesley Phillips, Ward 6 Chair, commented, Im excited to see the committee endorse such an inspiring and admirable woman as Andrea. Her background in spreading entrepreneurship and aiding job creation in Massachusetts will be of great value to the Democratic ticket in November. Silbert must win the Lieutenant Governors Democratic primary on September 19th to be placed on the Democratic ticket in November.
Note: many ward committees across Massachusetts do not as a rule endorse candidates for office. However, endorsement by ward committees is explicitly allowed, even encouraged, in the Massachusetts Democrats Party Charter (which can be obtained by contacting your local ward or town committee, or viewed at www.massdems.org). The Cambridge Ward Six Committee feels that the contested state-wide races this year merit endorsement by the committee. The Ward 6 Committee had previously endorsed John Bonifaz for Secretary of the Commonwealth, and is presently considering an endorsement in the Governor’s race.

Thought I’d just put it out there since Silbert folks now want to brag about endorsements that only a month or so ago they complained were unimportant..

LG candidate Andrea Silbert has amassed a respectable number of legislative and municipal official endorsements. Obviously, Andrea’s opponents had a considerable head start in this area, largely by virtue of being current or recent office-holders.
<
p>
However, a considerable number of Andrea’s endorsers were included among the co-sponsors of a recent fundraiser for Andrea:
<
p>
Former Attorney General Scott Harshbargar;
State Senators Robert Havern, Pat Jehlen, Robert O’Leary;
State Representatives Demetrius Atsalis, Gloria Fox, Rachel Kaprielian, Jay Kaufman, Jim Marzilli, Charley Murphy, Matt Patrick, Anne Paulsen, Alice Peisch, Denise Provost, Kathleen Teehan, Cleon Turner, Alice Wolf;
Former State Representatives Jim Collins, Susan Tracy;
Boston City Councilors Felix Arroyo, Charles Yancey;
Cambridge City Councilor Denise Simmons
<
p>
And needless to say, that list is growing.
<
p>
Finally a word regarding the significance of the Cambridge Ward 6 endorsement: unlike endorsements by elected officials, endorsements by organizations — including ward and town committees, which regrettably do not make endorsements in meaningfully contested elections as often as they might — usually come with “feet”. I know that my ward’s endorsement is not just meant as an empty statement, but will translate into direct action on behalf of all its endorsees, as well as hopefully set an example for other ward committees in our area.

Andrea Silbert has been endorsed by a failed Democratic candidate for Governor L. Scott Harshbarger (who hasnt been seen helping other Democrats since his defeat) and the Cambridge Ward 6 Committee it will be tough sledding against her opponents who have both garnered impressive support statewide read and compare (**taken from Murray and Goldberg websites Aug. 5, 2006 I stopped by Andreas site to add on her other endorsements, but there were none that I could find listed on the site…Hoss or Frank can post them if there are others)

Thank you for your scorecard, you might have made a decent post had you refrained from copy-pasting reams of text from other websites. As to your numbers, it’s not clear how you give Andrea a “?” for endorsements in most categories, implying that you do not know Andrea’s score; but a “0” in “county sheriffs” and “unions”. Do you have such a bead on Mass.’s county sheriffs that you know none have endorsed Andrea? Or was that a “close enough” assumption? I don’t know what other endorsements Andrea has either, but if you’re going to write about it, you ought to know.
<
p>
In any event, while your scorecard point is valid for those using endorsement counts as indicators of whom to vote for, in reality it is normal for current or past elected officials to have better access to endorsements than a first-time candidate such as Andrea. And that’s all the more reason to be aware of those endorsements the first-time candidate does garner.
hlpeary says
and was my source for Silbert endorsement list…she does not list any that I could find…on the score card I put question marks next to city councilors and selectman because I suspect she must have some in a statewide race, but she does not list them so I could not count them but did not want to put just another zero.
<
p>
None of the three candidates for Lt. Gov. can credibly be called “insiders”…Andrea comes from the non-profit organization arena and Goldberg and Murray come from municipal government…heck, most “insiders” at the State House can’t even find Worcester on a map! Ask any local mayor or selectman statewide and they will confirm that municipal leaders are afforded the most “outsider” status on Beacon Hill…
<
p>
I don’t believe endorsements alone make the difference. They can help in a tight race. In this race I think the local Mayors and Selectman are probably more significant than legislators or former failed candidates…because they have organizations at the local level and they are not involved in their own personal contests on the ballot…they can get involved in voter turnout for their prefered candidate.
will says
Because I didn’t refer to anyone as an “insider” or an “outsider” … I distinguished between “first-time candidates” and “current or past elected officials.”
hoss says
Wow, looks like Andrea’s screwed! I mean should she even stay in the race? If all these people that the voters trust think Tim or Deb is the best candidate, why did Andrea even bother running, or stay in the race after these endorsements came out? I mean, we’ve trusted these elected officials with our best interests, so shouldn’t we just go along with them?
<
p>
Wow, had I known that NOONE was with Andrea, I wouldn’t have gotten on board her train.
<
p>
Wait, what’s that you say? She’s raised more money than the others, even without all these endorsements, and will have a strong on-air presence when the TV ad season kicks in?
<
p>
Wait, what’s that you say? She surprised everyone at the Convention by finishing a strong second, beating out Deb, despite not having any of these allegedly helpful endorsements?
<
p>
Wait, what’s that you say? You say that you remember that the last time a candidate touted endorsements as a primary rationale for a candidacy he lost? Wasn’t that Jim Segel, who everyone thought would win?
<
p>
Wait, what’s that you say? You think that “outsider status” could carry significant weight this year due to the new voters Deval is bringing to the table?
<
p>
Wait, what’s that you say? You say that experience tells you that political endorsers nearly always dedicate whatever resources they have to the top of the ticket candidate they prefer and that downballot candidates don’t get the on-the-ground benefit that the Goubernatorial candidates get?
<
p>
Well, I guess there’s still hope for Andrea, but with a list of endorsers like those other two have, she really should just drop out.
hlpeary says
Oops! On scorecard, I missed a Congressman…with apologies to Congressman John Tierney who has also endorsed Tim Murray…
<
p>
