Adam at the U-Hub says get ready for more great moments in Boston commuting, courtesy of noted cannibalism expert Dick Cheney and “Republican bigwig” Dick Egan of EMC:
You may recall that the last time Cheney and Egan got together, back in 2003, the vice president caused a 20-mile or so backup on Rte. 128, which was closed so he could motorcade from Hanscom Air Force Base to Egan’s Hopkinton aerie.
Official business, everyone. Just remember that. Some rich guy is hosting Dick Cheney, and that’s screwing up your afternoon and keeping you from spending time with your family.
Well, when your approval ratings are in the 20’s, you might as well just stick up that middle finger right back at everyone. What have you got to lose?
There were times I just turned my engine off trying to get onto the Pike with the gridlocked traffic around the Park Plaza any one of the times Clinton was here.

And he wasn’t even an officeholder anymore!
look: we have two choices:
<
p>
(1) Require our national leaders to stay chained to their offices in Washington DC, or
<
p>
(2) Put up with the traffic caused by their security teams when they travel.
<
p>
While (1) does sound tempting, I think we’ve got to put up with (2). For every Cheney-hangs-out-with-EMC, there’s a John Kerry having an open forum at Faneuil Hall.

I do wonder though: who pays for the security detail while the person is actually fundraising? On the one hand, it’s not a good idea for them to not have security; on the other, I hate the idea that my tax dollars are going to help a politician of any party solicit funds. I suspect that in the big picture it might not matter much, as personal security is a miniscule part of the federal budget.
that gets my dander up. No, he shouldn’t be chained to his desk — in fact, I hope he’s at his undisclosed location as much as possible.
Years ago Ronald Raygun came to Hartford to speak at a Knights of Columbus Meeting in the Hartford Civic Center.
<
p>
My buddy and I went to Bradly Field to try and get a picture (those were the days where you could roam around an airport without a ticket).
<
p>
My brother and his buddy went to Hartford and tried to get a shot of him going into the civic center.
<
p>
Non of us had press passes – we were just freshman in college or high school seniors.
<
p>
At Bradly, we discovered AirForce 1 had landed and taxied to the National Guard hanger – we never saw Ronnie.
<
p>
The state police blocked traffic on the main highway (91) from bradley to Hartford. Ronnie sped out in his motorcade and a helicopter flew along above.
<
p>
In hartford, the motorcade drove right into the civic center.
<
p>
My brother and his friend never saw ronnie either.
<
p>
I don’t recall if this was before or after the assination attempt
<
p>
After the speech, they blocked the highway again – and they kicked cars off the bridges (we got yelled at by troopers for driving slow over one of the bridges.)
<
p>
Just as we pulled off the bridge the motorcade came speeding up the highway with helicopter above.
<
p>
My reaction then as it is now is “get over yourself”
<
p>
Yes I know they are our nation’s leaders but it seems to me that the people should have access to their elected officials.

This insulation is bad for democracy…
stepped things up after he was almost assassinated.
We lived less than a block away from George Bush, Sr.’s route from the airport to the school when he visited Phillips Andover. We were not asked to leave – no one ever spoke to us, although I expect they checked the whole area out in some way before they used our neighborhood to drive through.
We went down to Phillips to watch. Lots of Secret Service men around, but GWB waved at us all from his limo !!!WOW!! The limo was slowing down and I could have run over and touched him, he was that close. He looked smaller and thinner than I expected.
