After reading his column in today’s Globe, it is safe to say that Dan Payne clearly “absorbs” blogs.
His candidate assessments are okay and he finally put his finger on why Andrea Silbert may not be taking off…it’s attitude/over-sell that offends, in spite of resume.
He missed Congressman Tierney in Murray Congressional endorsement list…not that that will win or lose the election…
As for Goldberg, he predicts that she is as likely to win as anyone because if Gabrieli could buy the LG spot 4 years ago, Deb may be able to buy it in Sept with double the personal cash in play.
I am not ready to agree with that because what Payne does not factor in is that 4 years ago Chris was not running against just two women.
Even though Payne describes Andrea Silbert as “crassly ambitious and arrogant”, I think she is still the kind of candidate the Globe editorial Board will cling to..(they cover themselves with a woman to balance their Gov. endorsement, and keep the Harvard-Newton-Brookline crowd happy without having to endorse Goldberg)
Deb could compete or block newspaper endorsements by buying considerable advertising space…she is the only candidate that can afford to by print ads…and anyone who thinks that doesn’t cross pollenate into the Editorial rooms is a true idealist.
All endorsements aside…2 women, one man, lower card race…I still think Murray carries the day.

Just when I thought that Dan Payne was doing a credible job of handicapping the LG race, I read that incredible cheap shot he took at Andrea. There is nothing crass or arrogant about her. Ambition and ego, you bet, as with any candidate for office. Certainly winning an election as mayor and immediately announcing a run for statewide office or spending gobs of your trust fund for statewide office is as crass as anything Andrea Silbert has done to win election.

I don’t know what would make Payne take that shot, maybe getting fired as often as he does makes one like that.

Ever since he was fired by Kerry in 96, he’s been on a decade-long losing streak.

His most recent debacle (prior to getting the heave-ho from Deval)? Jim Segel 2002. This was a candidate who was a) well-financed, b) broadly supported both in and outside the “establishment” and c) eminently qualified in a below-the-radar race.

And what did Payne come up with for ads? Those STUPID scratch-ticket ads showing all the endorsements Segel got. I remember that race, I was supporting Segel at the time and when I saw those ads, I couldn’t believe it. Shoddy, shoddy work.

It’s too bad too because he did do some great stuff back in the day for Kerry and others. And he’s generally a very nice guy. (I’ve dealt with him tangentially in other non-political situations – i.e. he has no idea who I am, but I’ve seen him be a totally polite, normal guy.)

I guess I take some solace in Payne’s being off the mark in the past, and hope he’s off the mark in the LG’s race too!

Jumpster’s right, though: Andrea Silbert is sincere and polite, and nothing else I’ll give Payne the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant to put that in his description of either Deb Goldberg or Christy Mihos. Calling Andrea that is like calling Tim Murray outlandish, eccentric and extravagant – it just doesn’t fit.
