ADAM REILLY, BOSTON PHOENIX, AUG 28, 2006…has great article on the BATTLE FOR SECOND BANANA
He concludes:
“The best fit…
Since Democratic primary voters will pick both the gubernatorial and LG nominees on the same day, its impossible to say which LG candidate would most help the party in the general-election fight. But its not too early to ponder various hypothetical combinations. Tom Reilly and Tim Murray? Not the greatest combo, since it features two Irish pols from Central Massachusetts. Deval Patrick and Tim Murray? Way more intriguing: Murrays lunch bucketDem style could compliment Patricks liberal image, and his Worcester roots could help garner votes in a region that overwhelmingly broke for the Republicans in 2002. Chris Gabrieli and Deborah Goldberg? With that well-heeled ticket, Republican Kerry Healeys own deep pockets would suddenly matter a whole lot less. Reilly and Silbert? Nice gender and ideological balance, that. Patrick and Silbert? Plenty of brainpower there, but let the anti-lefty caricatures begin in earnest.
In less than a month, the Democratic Number Two will be fixed, for better or worse. So nows the time to kick each candidates tires….”

Sometimes certain articles seem to get buried fast with the rush of new posts. It was an interesting article about the 3 LG candidates, but I was more interested in the pair-ups angle to his story. I thought Adam’s concluding paragraph was a good jumping off point for a thread on what match-ups work best for the Democratic ticket and its ability to defeat Healey/Hillman…I think Adam made some shrewd observations.

I can agree with him that Patrick would be most helped by Murray…but I think the same can be said for Gabrieli… Murray brings a (truly) middle-class, Central Mass, Irish ethnicity, municipal govt. experience and political know-how to the ticket which will make Gabrieli or Patrick stronger.
