Tom Reilly hung a curve yesterday on Channel 4, questioning what the other candidates had done with their lives in the last ten years except for making all that sweet, sweet cash.
Gabrieli swings … there’s a drive …:
“It’s a shame that Tom Reilly, in a desperate attempt to catch up in the polls, has chosen to go negative. But to answer Tom Reilly’s question, Chris has spent the last ten years building businesses, expanding after-school programs, fighting for stem cell research, raising five wonderful kids, and lately, running a positive, substantive campaign for Governor.”

Tom Reilly may be a decent guy and a so-so AG, but he’s got all the political instincts of a ham sandwich. You’d think after so many years of being in public office — or arguing cases in court — that he’d know better than to throw up THAT lob.

Way back, and Manny makes the catch on the warning track.

… and it’s a doozy. Does that represent the total of Gabrieli’s work with Bessemer? Or Mass2020? Or whatever?

Come on. It was a dick remark by Reilly, and a ridiculous insinuation that people involved in business have impure bodily fluids, or whatever.

Stay on target…

People in the private sector should write big checks, but otherwise stay out of the way.

He’s cooked; he’s fried. But, then again, I said this in April.

Speaking of way back, could our pitching suck any more? Can’t find the plate with compass and sextant today.

Reilly is just about cooked, but not done yet.

When you make money like Gabrieli and Patrick have, you can occasionally make an enemy or two – and maybe Reilly is getting ready to leverage a few of them in upcoming ads, assuming that any exist and want to be used as props. That’s my guess – this is probably a foreshadowing of ads to come from a guy who does not like what he is seeing in the polls. Reilly needs a low turnout race and going negative can sometimes have that impact.

Gabrieli’s track-record is overwhelmingly positive, both in terms of success and in terms of $ made. He has been very generous with that wealth in terms of helping others.
<

At this point, I would say that it’s a toss-up between Gabrieli and Patrick with Reilly still in the hunt – call it 40% chance, 40% chance, 20% chance respectively. Reilly is trying to change the equation. It probably will not work, but this is not a surprise even though it is desperate and a little sad. Get ready for a heated last 4 plus weeks even – though I will predict that Gabrieli continues to run an overwhelmingly “positive, substantive campaign for Governor” through election day on the 19th.

It’s not like Reilly doesn’t have a point. Sure, Gabrieli has thrown around some of the money he has made to legitimate efforts, but Deval and Gabrieli have been focusing primarily on personal gain for quite some time whereas Reilly has been spending his time in the AG’s and DA’s office.
<

Maybe it doesn’t make a difference how they’ve been spending their time. Maybe it’s not fair to hold it against any candidate. Reilly, though, deserves some credit for dedicating his life to public service.

Democrats lose. To describe involvement in the private sector as “focusing primarily on personal gain” completely misunderstands what the private sector is about. Sure, people in the private sector want to make a living, and some do pretty darn well. But most of them are advancing the public interest more effectively than these public sector guys. The devil’s always in the details.

No one is saying Reilly doesn’t deserve “credit” for his time in the DA’s and AG’s offices. He’s done good work in both places. Does that mean it’s “his turn” to be Governor?

No mention of his ‘postive, substantive campaign’ for Lieutenant Governor!

Criminy, he could at least say he’s actually been brave enough to put himself on the ballot before, instead of expecting a coronation for the Top Job based on resume!
