Today, in response to Chris Gabrieli’s badly-received comparison of Springfield to Detroit, the Tom Reilly campaign released the following, fairly amusing statement:
CHRIS GABRIELI SHOULD DO HIS SPRINGFIELD HOMEWORK
Side-by-side comparison shows Springfield is no Detroit
Chris Gabrieli today refused to publicly apologize to the people of Springfield for his remark to the Boston Globe comparing Springfield to Detroit. Gabrieli, one of the founders of a Massachusetts think tank, might want to do some deep thinking over the final weekend of the primary before he mocks Massachusetts again.
To help, the Reilly campaign offers a side-by-side comparison for Gabrieli:
DETROIT…………………………………………SPRINGFIELD
Population of 911,000 people…………………..Population 152,000
Home of the Aries K car………Home of the classic Indian motorcycle
Ranked the most dangerous city in America….Wasnt Dubbed Murder City Birthplace of Basketball
Will close 95 schools by 2009…..Home of favorite kids author Dr. Seuss
Epicenter of the Rust Belt……….Epicenter of the lush Pioneer Valley
16,000 houses left abandoned in 1999………Called the City of Homes
Birthplace of Kidd Rock…….Birthplace of the next Governor of Massachusetts, Tom Reilly
Not bad, guys!
Also, check out Detroit native Kim Atkins’ take on all this.

But, hey, you can’t blame, Gabbers. Maybe he was talking about Springfield, USA, Home of the Simpsons!
maverickdem says
like that “Simpsons” reference would be lost on Gabbers. 😉

I have to say this a bad thing for Gabs to have wondered into, and a nice response from Reilly. Those of us in the ‘rest of the state’ do matter, and we’re working very hard to make our cities better. Sorry it ain’t Louisburg Sq., but we’re trying to revitalize out here.

I know the next response from most people is that Deval is a millionare with a house in Milton, but guess what? He never slammed the other cities in this state, he sees them as the havens of affordable housing that brought me to the city I now know and love, which is Worcester. He’s been on the ground in the nice parts and the not-so-nice parts.

For some comparison and a look at why I was so happy to move back to MA, go check out any and every city in CT, where it just doesn’t seem as though anyone is even trying. By contrast, Worcester is trying. Every day, and in many ways. Likewise Springfield, Pittsfield, New Bedford, Methuen, Lynn, Lowell, Taunton, and every other old mill town looking for a new identity. Throw us a freakin’ bone instead of throwing us under the bus, wouldya?

It’s not a big state Gabs…Slam its struggling population centers at your own peril.

Gabs is just out of touch. Deval Patrick’s holding a speech in New Bedford tommorow and I plan on being there.

Priceless.

Cute and Gabrieli was really stretching it with the analogy – he deserves the reply he got.

I’m reminded of the old movie, “Kentucky Fried Movie” a spoof of the mid ’70s (my high school years)
<

In the middle of the movie they did a parody of Bruce Lee’s classic “Enter the Dragon.”
<
p>
The villain sends one of his enemies to Detroit. As the henchmen are dragging the enemy from the room he yells, “No, no, anywhere but Detroit!”

I still quote the line but nobody gets the joke anymore 🙁 I’m getting old 🙂

but it’s Kid Rock (1 d) who, for my money, is more interesting, insightful, talented, and collaborative than Tom Reilly.

should do his homework on Springfield too. He’s ignored it for the last twenty odd years. The corruption probes? Being done by the feds. I do so hope that someone starts asking where he’s been as AG and why his good buddies look the other way in Springfield.

Here come the party poopers! Get out the birthday hats for Debby Downer and crew.

…now he can never run for President! 😉

Just goes to show you that money can’t buy you an election. He’s not ready for prime time. It’s time to take out the garbage on Tuesday.

“The towns around Springfield are doing fine. Springfield is Detroit,” Gabrieli is quoted as saying.

Gabs, give Swifty a call and ask if you can rent her chopper for the weekend. You can get to Framingham on a single tank. Plus you get the benefits of the flyover that you don’t get straphanging with the 6:05 crowd out of South Station.

I thought the plan was to beat up on Patrick??? That was the game plan since the last debate…go after the front-runner until next Tuesay, right? Now they are arguing about…SPRINGFIELD? Also, Reilly also could not resist taking a swipe at Gabs over Muffy’s tycoon ad. And now Gab’s forgets to have the help check for photographers before they put out the recycle bin, (BTW…it was a stupid ad and he was just beggin for trouble) and Reilly jumps on that!!! I am not sure who should be fired: the campaign staff or the candidates! Meanwhile Deval is just rolling along, disciplined as always.
