Congressional candidate and Iraq war opponent Phil Dunkelbarger has challenged the man he calls “the Duckster” Congressman Stephen Lynch (a member of a Royal Chicken Coop to the right and in general an Iraq war proponent), right here on BMG.
Here is Dunkelbarger’s comment posted this evening:
In the September 7th edition of the Dorchester Reporter Stephen Lynch said, “There’s not a lot of time between now and the [September 19 primary], but there could be another opportunity for a debate if we could work out a date.”
Well, working out a date is no problem for me; any time, any place. If the Duckster has finally been shamed into a debate, the Dunkster is ready.
It is curious to me that he wouldn’t contact us directly, to suggest a time and place. I hope he’s serious.
We’ll be suggesting a televised debate. Of the regional media, encompassing the whole of the 9th District, NECN has given this race the most coverage. Curtis, Braude, and Sahl are all seasoned, respected TV journalists who could organize a fair program which would maximize the opportunity for an infomed vote on the 19th. TV also reduces the logistical obstacles, where the debate could be taped whenever mutually convenient and aired later.
Anyway, if you’d like to see this debate, even a fraction as much as I’d like to do it, please blog for it. Thanks.

Lynch has never had a real race for his seat. In addition, very little has been reported in the press about his various positions on Iraq and his antics re Terri Schiavo. He’s been given a free ride. He has yet to be held accountable for siding with the Republican crazies and would prefer not to be.

It is insulting to voters and to the democratic process for him to play duck and cover during this entire election season and then claim that time is short. This is not something that just occurred last week. Evasion has been his strategy all along.

I attended a long ago candidates’ night event in Bridgewater when Phil Dunkelbarger, William Galvin, John Bonifaz, Andrea Silbert and others spoke to the Plymouth County Democratic League. Stephen Lynch sent his regrets because he was, get this, visiting the troops in Iraq. And the excuses have piled up since then. He has avoided being in the same room with Dunkelbarger for as long as this race has been going on. Now he says that time is short.

How stupid does he think people are? He’s playing games and lying about it. And he’s counting on uninformed voters to just keep checking his name off on the ballot. I hope 9th District voters demand more from their representative and give Lynch a big wake-up shock on election night. The 9th District deserves better representation and Lynch deserves a lesson in humility.
