This is what Deval Patrick said:
“I think we can get to a point where we can roll back the income tax,” he said. “It’s not about today. It’s not about never. It’s about being realistic.”
Democrats spar over Big Dig, taxes at governor candidates forum
By Steve LeBlanc, Associated Press Writer, September 7, 2006
Now let’s look at a previous Globe story.
Deval Patrick, the other Democrat, says the state can’t afford to cut the income tax and fund the priorities he favors, at least not right now.
Gabrieli’s balanced blueprint for income tax cut
By Scot Lehigh, Globe Columnist | August 8, 2006
And, why not?, let’s look at it straight from the horse’s mouth.
PATRICK: But the way to do that, you cannot reduce the property tax unless you give cities and towns more local aid. You cannot provide local aid and at the same time, at least at the levels we need, and at the same time roll the income tax back. So I believe we should postpone that income tax rollback. . . .
Candidates outline views on a tax cut
June 22, 2006
What follows are excerpts from yesterday’s Democratic gubernatorial debate on WGBH -TV ‘s Greater Boston program with host Emily Rooney and candidates Christopher F. Gabrieli, Deval L. Patrick, and Thomas F. Reilly.
(That transcript is also available in the boston.com archives.)
Can anyone out there find more examples? I am sure there are some.
I don’t want to rag on the Globe too much, they are looking for a headline for what appeared to be a standard and pretty boring debate. I get that. But guys, you have been following this campaign for a while, that must have rung some bells.
(For full disclosure, I do volunteer for Deval Patrick and have for a while.)
(For fuller disclosure, I don’t know how to add links.)

Even I, someone who favors the rollback, knew about Patrick’s earlier statements.

And those statements about postponing the rollback will be interpreted by his opponents, but to see that interpretation in a newspaper article, as opposed to on the editorial page, is a bit much. Sounds like your Dad was quite astute! đŸ™‚

As for links, maybe there is an easier way, but this is what I do. Suppose I want to link “THIS TEXT” to my website (http://www.dianeweir…). I would type this:
<
p>
a href=”http:www.dianeweir.com”>THIS TEXT
<
p>
I didn’t include those above so that the link won’t appear (unless of course I’m underestimating the syntax auto-fix of this site)
<

<

In general, the syntax is:
<
p>
a href=”URL YOU WANT TO LINK TO”>TEXT THAT WILL APPEAR AS LINK</a
(again with opening and closing brackets omitted)
dweir says
There is some source fixing that goes on.
<
p>
Let me try again.
<
p>
For the first part, you need to include
<
p>
a href = YOUR URL IN QUOTES
<
p>
inside pointy brackets (the kind above the comma and period)
<
p>
Next you put the text that appears as a link
<
p>
Then you put an open bracket / close bracket.
<
p>
Awww…. see here!!!
