When we heard Christy Mihos had hired inventive adman Bill Hillsman — veteran of Paul Wellstone’s and Jesse Ventura’s successful campaigns in Minnesota — we knew we were in for some fun. And Mihos/Hillsman have delivered: An abrasive, funny late-night only spot which shows a cartoon Christy Mihos asking tough questions about the Big Dig, causing Beacon Hill bigwigs to stuff their heads up their asses. And it must be said that one of the animated Beacon Hill cranio-rectal contortionists bears a striking resemblance to Kerry Healey.
It’s pretty dark, absurd and angry … just about the perfect response to the Big Dig, no? This ad takes a big bite out of Healey; She’s already in the difficult position of having to act as the standard-bearer for an administration that enjoys only tepid public support, and now she’s portrayed as yet another Beacon Hill asshat. That’s gotta hurt.
I don’t think Christy would make much of a governor; when it comes to many policy nuts n’ bolts he seems to be winging it. But I like him. And folks like him have been — and remain — part of the solution in Massachusetts. Christy’s finally getting his revenge, and it’s been long time coming.
No downside here for Deval, Christy’s criticism comes out of Healey’s hide.
Thanks for posting, I almost never see a commercial now with that Tivo habit….

Well, it made me laugh. And it made us talk about it. I guess it worked in some ways. Would it get me to vote for Mihos? Um, nope.

Politics can use a little more laughter.
That’s why it’s genius. You buy the ad spots, but you actually get a lot more exposure from the media hubbub.
who hasn’t much time for politics (he defers to Wifey-poo for his political information) saw this ad first and loved it so much that he begged me to look it up on the internets.

I was not disappointed.

I’ve been familiar with Mihos for a while, mainly from living in Woostah for 18 years and following his travails on the Turnpike board. I never thought of him as an aspiring anybody, so I think that, rather than some overweening ambition, what drives Mihos’ campaign is a desire to get back at the Mittster/SoccerMom duo in the most public way possible.

I also get the distinct impression he’s having a lot of fun with this.
I was noticing you over here recently and was psyched to see your name!

I have to agree–I think he is having fun with it. And after hearing the debate I hope he has more fun still!

Funny, though, I had listened to the debate on radio and was talking to people who saw it on TV and our impressions were different. TV viewers said Christy seemed more unhinged than I felt he sounded. And that he was kind of a funny orange color….?
I’m fascinated by his candidacy… I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of this was building name recognition for the possibility Kerry runs for President in ’08 and decides not to pull a Joementum and run for Senate at the same time. Or it could be for ’10…

As for Hillsman, he’s quite the maverick when it comes to ads. He’s also doing Ned Lamont’s stuff in CT. You’ve got the candidates with independent streak (ie Ventura, Wellstone) going to him to make ads that work. I’d say as you have all said that the ad will hit at Healey’s credibility quite well.
…in Boston Magazine.

He wants to run against John Kerry. He appears to have gotten his Kerrysmixed up.

Good luck getting the GOP to back him now.
Any TiVoers out there got this on tape? This ad needs to be on YouTube pronto.
I really hope someone gets this on YouTube pronto.
is also very telling. She is trying to ignore Mihos and there by make this in to a two person race. Her vs Deval. That is a dangerous strategy. I think Mihos is cheesed off enough to really go after her. Ignoring him is not a good idea for either candidate. Is he going to be in the debate tonight or is this a silver platter debate direct from Fox News in which only Healey and Deval can participate and Chris Wallace will go tag team with Healey vs Deval instead of actually moderating? I am worried we are walking in to the lions den. Deval best be ready.
All four candidates (including Grace Ross) will be in the Fox25 debate tonight.
It’s on the front page …

Don’t think that this elevates him in the Governor race (obviously), but a thumbs up on the comedy scale.

Just pulse that thing a few times, comes out real smooth-like …
