Politics in Poetics — the Last Ten Days

If politics t’were a contact sport round these here parts,

Then September’s the time when the contact really starts.

We had everyone goin’ negative (though “they never started it”)

And mass confusion over standings ‘till some new polls parted it.

Deval jumped out in the lead in two polls released yesterday,

So that means no outliers — those pollsters earned all their pay.

Reilly is barely keeping his head above 20 percent sez the data,

And now Gabrieli’s actin’ like just another ol’ playa hata –

“It’s a two person race!” sez Chris, “it’s only Deval or its me,

So a vote for Reilly is a vote wasted, you see.”

After self-immolating at the penultimate debate,

Reilly seems to have condemned himself to just a loser’s fate.

Unless Tom turns it ‘round at tonight’s wordy throwdown,

The primary will indeed be just a two-man high-noon showdown.

The papers announced their endorsements, spreading them ‘round –

Expect Deval’s team to run the Globe’s thumbs up into the ground.

Tom grabbed the Herald, as well as papers on the Cape and out west.

Sniff – no editor we know has yet said that Chris is the best.

The LG candidates continued to fight ‘neath everyone’s notice

To become our commonwealth’s version of being V-POTUS

No candidate tops 20 points in polls that we’ve seen –

They’re barely ahead of Elvis Presley, Cher, or James Dean.

Sadly, the hope of a free Senate seat down south in R. I.

Waned as Chaffee survived Laffey’s challenge of “tax cuts or die”

As for the rest of the country, I’m all out of verse,

And I’ll stop soon now before it gets any worse.

Hopefully in some ten days there’ll be more politics in review,

To remember what we saw, what we said, what we all thought we new.
