The Massachusetts AFL-CIO endorsed Secretary Galvin for reelection last June. However, it appears that the “Voice of Working Families” did not actually make a formal announcement until August 28.
While I am unsure of the reason for the delay, it appears to be a very strong endorsement (an excerpt below):
I have known Bill Galvin a long time and he is one of the smartest people in government today, stated Massachusetts AFL-CIO President Robert J. Haynes. Secretary Galvin is frankly the best Secretary of State ever. He has been a tremendous champion for working people his entire career.
Secretary Galvin has mastered using the Secretary of States office to keep corporate greed in check, highlight the transgressions of the business community against working people, and to particularly fight to protect workers pensions and retirement security all proof of his commitment to the working people of Massachusetts.
Haynes went on to say, Whether hes been fighting greedy CEOs, working to protect pensions, rallying with workers on strike, or being available and accessible to working peoples needs, Bill Galvin is undoubtedly, irrefutably the working families candidate for Secretary of State. Thats why we are proud to endorse him and want every voter to know that there is only one candidate for this office who has a track record of standing up and fighting for working people. That candidate is Bill Galvin.
It remains to be seen if labor will seriously go to bat for Galvin with GOTV and election day visibility, but Haynes’s comments feed Galvin’s message of standing up to corporate interests and heighten his populist appeal. This may be tough for Jill Stein or John Bonifaz to counter, especially Bonifaz if the AFL-CIO sits out the Democratic governor primary.
