Another endorsement for Chris Gabrieli (please see below).
SUN ENDORSEMENT
Selecting the state’s new leader is sometimes about the past and sometimes about the future. No one has established a more dignified public-service career in Massachusetts than Tom Reilly during his tenures as assistant district attorney, Middlesex district attorney and state attorney general.
When Greater Lowell needs him, Reilly is there, whether it is working to reduce gang violence, suing companies that manufactured defective bullet-proof vests or pushing for investment in UMass Lowell. The Sun appreciates his dedication, determination and hands-on approach.
But with serious concerns regarding education, jobs, housing, and the economy, Massachusetts must look to the future. The position of governor requires someone with strengths in myriad areas.
Massachusetts needs someone in the governor’s seat who will bring innovation, dedication and consensus building to the post. Someone who can appoint a strong team of professionals with experience in economic development, education and financial management.
Each of the three candidates running in Tuesday’s Democratic primary are worthy of consideration and offer different strengths and experience.
Deval Patrick supports more early-education and alternative energy programs, but he opposes the income tax rollback taxpayers voted for six years ago.
A governor should respond to voters. After careful consideration, The Sun believes Chris Gabrieli has the clearest, most decisive plans to improve public education, attract new business, increase local aid, build more affordable housing and eliminate wasteful spending.
Gabrieli would be a strong pro-business governor. If elected, he has promised to invest $1 billion in science and embryonic stem-cell research as well as in other cutting-edge industries. These are the businesses that will provide our residents with high-paying jobs in the future.
Gabrieli is a proponent of innovation in our public schools, including expanding the number of charter schools. Through a non-profit foundation he started, Gabrieli successfully fought to extend the school day in some Massachusetts schools. He frowns on the practice of creating unfunded state mandates, which place an unfair burden on school districts.
He will rollback the 5.3 percent income tax rate in a carefully thought-out plan, and implement multiyear fiscal planning and budget forecasting to aid the state in maintaining financial discipline and in charting its future.
The Sun is pleased to endorse Chris Gabrieli for governor in the Sept. 19 Democratic primary.

Lowell Sun endorsements are usually a signal of who NOT to vote for.

They endorsed me over a fake-tax-cutter in the Tyngsboro election, so give them some credit at least I guess.

I do think they’re endorsing what, in their minds at least, would be the weakest ticket against Healey for the state election.

I hear they endorsed Silbert for LG, but don’t have a hard copy of the paper.

They did endorse Silbert.
