Mark Foley’s checking himself into alcohol-rehab is a little suspiciously convenient I would say. His alleged alcoholism escaped the notice of everyone around him, but it’s been responsible for “naughty emails” for over 3 years? Recall that a conservative Republican Congressman exposed for soliciting a 16 year old male back in 1980, Bob Bauman of Maryland, also blamed alcoholism for his questionable behavior, because substance abuse carries less stigma among the religious right GOP base than homosexuality. Drinking too much won’t make you homosexual or a “chicken hawk”, but living a life of duplicity will corrode your judgment and discretion.
The culprit in Mark Foley’s fall is internalized homophobia, not substance abuse, but the charade continues and the hypocrisy intensifies.
