With the joy of finding the Globe had endorsed Deval also came the sadness that I found out that Red Auerbach has passed away.
He was, in many respects, a giant just before my time. I loved watching basketball as a kid and I later learned a little bit about what happens behind the scenes. He became a legend to me — 16 championships under his guidance, the first in NBA history to draft an African-American, he got Bird and Russell and all those greats. Others will do better obituaries than I, but I felt the need to write just a little something here.

Championships. Johnny Most. Defying the basketball world and integrating the team. Passing on the coaching reigns to Bill Russell. Magical trades. Wisdom.
