If I didn’t read this in the Wall Street Journal (subscription required), I wouldn’t have believed it.
Joining Welch in his bid to purchase the Globe is a website, or “blog”, called Blue Mass Group. “While the Globe has rapidly declined in subscribers and ad pages,” said Welch, “BMG has grown exponentially. Even an old dog like me can see which way this is going.”
Though details were not released, BMG would get an equity stake. Bob Neer, a BMG co-founder, was interviewing Welch. “It started with small talk…we both recently got married, and Jack explained that being hitched was a great way to meet chicks. He also said ‘Interviews kind of turn me on’ and he looked at me and there was a very weird silence.”
“But then he asked if BMG would help on the bid to wrest the Globe away from the New York Times.”
Ownership of the blog, however, is not clear. Some contributors claim they have equity. One frequent poster, Pablo said, “I post the most, a slice would be nice” before adding, apropos of nothing, “Charter schools are the antichrist.”
Contributor Gary said if BMG bought the Globe, he would not join the union. “The appropriate minimum wage is zero,” he said.
Ernie Boch, III, shrugged. “Punch isn’t going to sell. Which is just as well. I don’t want camomile-drinking Ivy editors messing with my speling.”

When BMG explored the Globe acquisition, a lot of people – maybe even you BMG owners – were skeptical. No money, no connections, no clue — just three pale, sun deprived, guys sitting in their basement in pajamas.

For 18 months I have been listening to the pundits and the wise guys say, “No, they can’t.” But they underestimated you. To those naysayers, I draw an unwavering line in the sand and say, “no, maybe they can’t.”

If you work together, it’ll be a great acquisition, but maybe not. Of course, there’s some good synergy there. On the other hand I can’t forget the people who can’t afford to buy the Globe. They, the readers, make this Commonwealth great, along with of course, the non-readers, by which I mean Herald subscribers.

It’s all about change. Buy the Globe. Look for change–seventy five cents I think.

…the Globe plans to throw in Starbuck’s new “Minuscolo” Latte. It’s 5 mililiters, just enough for a taste, with enough powdered cocaine to match the caffeine of a “Vente.”
