A couple of years ago Marian Walsh shocked her district, which is probably the most Catholic district in the state, when she went against all predictions and voted against restrictions on gay marriage in Massachusetts. Marian has always provided well for her district, focusing on schools, seniors, and the environment. She has shown a willingness to listen over the years, and is also willing to change her mind on an issue if the arguments are right. At her annual Harvest Breakfast on Sunday, she was joined by Deval Patrick, who thanked her for her very early and consistent support.
Her opponent, Doug Obey from Westwood, is a conservative Republican who never had an idea that he didn’t think was brilliant. Though pro-choice, he is against gay marriage and for the death penalty. Obey fought against Westwood putting land into conservation, and urged the town to reject funding from the state from that purpose. Town Meeting disagreed, in three successive votes that were each approximately 475-10. He ran for Selectman in Westwood and was tromped. He also supports immediate tax rollback to 5% and has made anti-immigration stands part of his platform.
And he has more freaking signs in West Roxbury/Dedham/Westwood/Norwood than you can imagine, including up in trees and all over public rights-of-way. Very annoying.
So I’m urging a vote for Marian Walsh.

After meeting him at the Readville train station one morning I spent the whole ride in town picking apart his flier. It wasn’t pretty. He also had a Wikipedia page made, but the text was copied right off his campaign website. It eventually was taken down, as much for being promotional and not encyclopedic as for him not being notable. I havent seen any of his recent stuff, but you have to question the wisdom of taking on an incumbent that won every single precinct is a contested election two years ago.

So that’s why my “most Catholic” father hates her now. Got it.
