I am so tired of the debate on whether anyone should be able to vote on my — or anyone else’s — civil rights. Would you be having this long and tortured discussion about “procedure” if the issue involved the rights of African-Americans, Jews, Catholics, etc., to marry whom they wished? Thankfully, I can’t imagine it. Somehow, though, it remains acceptable to use the rights of lesbians and gays as political footballs and fodder for tiresome and homophobic debate. Please give it a rest and move on, as I hope the legislature has.

that people in NY, NJ, and California will never have the right to SSM, since it is not an appropriate matter for the legislature or the voters.

…by ‘recessing’ until January 2 instad of having the gut to vote. So it will still come up again, at least once, and probably more if they refuse to vote again.

Please convince the State GOP to continue making gay marriage an issue. It will be interesting to see if Democratic control of the legislature will push past 90%.

…to vote and to be recorded on the motion to recess, and in effect, kill this amendment. They have had the guts to vote on the issue of gay marriage time and time again. Do you or anyone else here still not know where your legislators stand on this issue?

The obsession with this whole con con issue has become so very tired, and I agree with the others on this thread that it is high time to move on to the more important issues that unite us.

Besides, it is pretty sad and demoralizing to see Blue Mass Group in the company of Mitt Romney and the Catholic Church on this or any other issue.

Once upon a time, the Catholic church was opposed to war and the death penalty, and supported social services. And Mitt Romney was pro-choice đŸ™‚

The US bishops just put out a statement declaring “that the goal in Iraq should be justice and peace, rather than victory, and that the nation should withdraw its forces at the earliest opportunity, consistent with a responsible transition.” Catholic Charities is the state’s largest private social service provider with something like 2/3 of the people they serve being non-Catholic.

They also were some of the biggest opponents when the death penalty was being debated a few years ago (and I don’t remember quite so many concerns over the separation of church and state being voiced by the progressive community then.). Give credit where credit is due.

As for Mitt, well…

has made their crusade against gay marriage and homophobia their number one priority to divert attention from the fact that they have enabled priests to molest children for the last several years. Their campaign against gay marriage is a thinly veiled attempt to make people forget that Catholic leaders like Cardinal Law should be in jail. They have tried and succeeded in changing the subject.

They have not opposed the war in Iraq or the death penalty with nearly the same amount of energy, effort and vitriol that they have put into the crusade against gay marriage. Sorry, I can’t give them any credit here at all.
kai says
The gay community has put more time, effort and money into advocating for gay marriage than anything else they have ever done, and I oppose gay marriage. Therefor, I will disregard every good thing they have ever done.

Doesn’t work like that, mlek.

Geez, go away from the computer for two days and the internets erupt. Seriously, I know this is a passionate issue for people…but for heaven’s sake, move on, people. We have a lotta work to do.

I think this whole debate has been somewhat misguided, as I’ve stated on my blog multiple times, in the first place. It’s done, it’s gone, and it’s been analyzed from all angles over and over. But we’re better than this. We can overcome this and get to the place we need to go – better governance, better accountability, and we have more in common than we do differences. Though if we’re going to have a knock-down drag-out fight, this one over tiny minutia of procedure is at least not a movement-buster.
