I think that Democrats Bill Strauss and Steve Canessa are both safe, as are Republicans Susan Gifford and Dan Webster.

The fiercest race down here is in the 12th Plymouth, where two Kingston residents fight to succeed Dem Tom O’Brien, who was appointed Plymouth County Treasurer.
Democrat Tom Calter was selected by a caucus as O’Brien’s name was on the Primary ballot. Calter serves on the Silver Lake Regional School Board and has 30 years of experience in the environmental services industry.
Republican Olly deMacedo, brother of Rep Vinny (R, 1st Plymouth), won a write-in campaign on a recount after launching his campaign 12 days prior to the election; that day the Republican State Committee told candidate Paul Curtis to take a hike (Curtis this week endorsed Calter as a man of integrity.) deMacedo has been a Kingston selectman for 12 years.
I don’t know of any non-partisan polls, but the race seems a toss-up.

Peter Koutoujian is safe. His opponent is running on a budget of $200 to promote the idea of abolishing the income tax.

Peter’s opponent has some other ideas too…. stop same sex marriage and burn the state Constitution in effigy.

I saw an ad for a challenger from Waltham who I was rather insulted by and booed at the TV, but it wasn’t that guy… Is there another seat covered by Waltham other than the 9th and 10th?
cephme says
Are Tom Stanley’s (north of the river and including parts of Lexington) and Peter Koutoujian (south of the river and including parts of Watertown and Newton). Maybe it was Tom’s opponent. I am not sure. I live in Peter’s district so have not really followed Tom’s race. Also Sandy Martinez is running against Senator Fargo. She has a sizeable presence. Maybe that is who you saw.

1st WORCESTER
Nate Kaplan, (D) Lewis Evangelidis (i), (R).

I have been hearing that Kaplan has a pretty good chance in this one, although I have no hard numbers to confirm it. I stood out for him last weekend, and the reception was awesome…I hope he can pull it off.

108 unopposed incumbents! That’s pretty amazing … and very sad that the majority of House seats will see no opposition, no debate, no direct calls for accountability.
<
p>
My Rep is on the unopposed list and I support him, but competition is a good thing. It makes all of us better. Would a Republican ever win in my district? It would take a miracle, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be someone challenging my Rep to lay out his vision and his record.
<
p>
What’s interesting is that there are 13 unopposed Republicans. You’d think that in what is essentially a one-party state (with few exceptions, obviously), that the Dems would have someone running against every Repub. Any thoughts as to why so many uncontested Repub seats?
<
p>
Also, I hear Eldridge is in a tough fight. Not sure if that’s changed in the last few days.

cephme says
It was about 55K
gary says
But $55K probably explains why so many seats are unopposed.
cephme says
She mentioned that she would have to take significant pay cut if she was elected. In the end she did not run as our state rep decided to withdraw from the DA race and continue in the legislature, but it is consideration candidates need to face.
peter-porcupine says
To prevent more Halloween Pay Raises, they passed a law that gives them a raise EVERY year – which was controversial in 2002 (WILL you accept your raise since the state is broke?)
darkhorse says
many Reps continue to work in other jobs while in office. There are quite a few that work part-time as attorneys either in private practice or with local firms.
davemb says
I’ve never heard of Andrulis and he has no visible campaign in Northampton, the center of the district. Republicans are not a big threat in these parts at the moment. Kocot was at the Patrick rally at UMass Tuesday, along with popular former GOP rep and ag commissioner Jay Healy, from Charlemont in the hilltowns, who has left the GOP.
