Perhaps Republican support isn’t the only thing behind Lieberman’s 49%-37% lead in Connecticut. The New York Times reports that his campaign has a lot of money that is unaccounted for, or deliberately mis-accounted (the discussion in the comments is also worth reading). There’s the nearly $400,000 in unaccounted “petty cash.” See also the report in the New Haven Register that two men contracted by the campaign each received one check for their services but were listed in a campaign report as having received two checks, totalling another $20,000 in mis-accounted money. And that’s just what we know from people who have come forward. Then there’s the teenagers and campaign workers being paid hundreds of dollars cash. All very, very suspicious.
Of course when Lamont complained to the FEC about all this loose cash, Lieberman called the complaint “a political trick.” There’s certainly a “political trick” in this story, but Lieberman’s got his finger pointed at the wrong campaign.
Tangent: Galvin isn’t the only one who refuses to debate.
