I don’t think I’ll ever see this again: Howie Carr and the Globe editorial board agreeing (almost).
The subject is the late Jimmy Kelly. Both the Globe’s and Carr’s assessments strike me as fair, respectful, not whitewashes, and not hatchet jobs.
Carr’s piece is particularly interesting, as it deals openly with Kelly’s connections to the Mullens gang and Whitey Bulger. Carr’s writing, usually in the “for entertainment purposes only” category (in the same way that poking yourself in the eye can be considered “entertainment”), always goes to a different level whenever he writes about organized crime in Boston, particularly South Boston. It’s a fascinating subject about which Carr probably knows more than anyone else in the business today, and reading Carr’s work in this area is always an education. Thanks Howie.
