Syria and Iran, along with the other countries in the region, all have interests in a more stable Iraq. If nothing else, both countries are now facing a major refugee crisis, as literally millions of Iraqis flee the civil war in Iraq. Neither country has the resources to provide long-term homes and livelihoods for the large numbers of people they’ve taken in. The right diplomatic approach could slowly and carefully involve Iraq’s neighbors in resolving Iraq’s problems.
Sadly for all of us and for the people of Iraq, the President showed last night that he’s still in thrall to the neocon view of the world and the amateur hour diplomacy he’s employed during the past six years. He’s learned nothing from his catastrophic mistakes in the Middle East.
