E-Z Pass

E-Z Pass- The Mass Pike needs to raise tolls on cash paying customers and create greater incentives for drivers to use E-Z Pass. Electronic payments are cheaper, have no collection issues and reduce road congestion.

    My parents, in NY, got their EZ Pass for free and as infrequent toll payers, are allowed to maintain a small balance on their tag.

    Masspike made me buy my Fastlane.  Because of an occassional weekend in NYC, with tolls– expensive tolls!– everywhere, my usage is nothing for long stretches, and then a big spike.  Masspike makes me keep a great big balance on the tag, earning the interest off my money.  And now, since the tags are five years old, we will soon be asked to buy new ones.

    The toll road authorities in and around NYC seem to view the little gizmos as a way to speed up traffic and reduce congestion and the corresponding polution.  The Mass Turnpike Authority seems to view tham as an additional revenue source.

    • I think it’s ridiculous that MassTransit expects me to incur additional expense, and the inconvenience of getting and maintaining a transponder, just so I can save them money.

  2. Is it a commerce clause violation if a state does not allow out-of-staters to buy transponders or charges a higher fee to out-of-staters?  I have no idea?  Anyone?

  3. We as residents of Massachusetts want the state to operate in the most efficient manner possible. The less it costs to run the state, they less we will pay in taxes.

    Drivers who want to pay tolls in a more costly manner should pay a higher toll, than drivers who pay in an efficient manner.

    Toll collectors cost x $ an hour plus benefits.  Imagine we all still used bank tellers to get money and there where no ATM’s.
    What a waste.
