Cheat Sheet for the 5th Congressional District

  • I am aware that other legislators, technically, are “eligible” to run for this seat, as the Secretary of State notes, the only requirements are that the candidate is 25 years old, has been a citizen for at least seven years and is an inhabitant of Massachusetts – not necessarily an inhabitant of said congressional district (as is specified for a state house seat) – upon election to Congress. The whole out of district thing doesn’t feel right but still, that’s the info I’ve found and if anybody knows otherwise please post it!

  • I am also aware that only four of our congressmen actually served in either the state house, state senate or both prior to their election to congress: two were mayors, one a DA and others were other things. As such, for those of you reading who have a favorite candidate who is not a legislator I advise this: relax… I just decided to focus on the legislators.

  • I don’t have a horse in this race yet, mostly because it’s not a race yet?

    The District: 29 Cities and Towns –  in no particular order: Shirley, Lancaster, Berlin, Bolton, Harvard, Ayer, Groton, Dunstable, Tyngsborough, Westford, Littleton, Boxborough, Stow, Hudson, Sudbury, Maynard, Acton, Wayland, Concord, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Lowell, Dracut, Billerica, Tewksbury, Andover, Methuen, Lawrence and Haverhill

    The Senators: Info includes name of senator who lives in the district, number of cities and towns that they either all or partially represent (some may be more vital than others?) and their cash on hand (cuz it’s important) as of their last filing in late January 2007.

    2. Rep. Harriet Stanley is in that Cong. District…not that she is considering this race, but most of the folks you listed aren’t either.

      • Her bio page says that she was the Town Treasurer for Merrimack… a town that’s not in the district. Did she move?

        • was that as I stated in my original post, I’m aware that the vast majority are not running… I was just looking to figure out who could run.

        • I meant to say Stanley already represented part of the District (Haverhill), not that she lived there…you don’t have to live there to run in a Congressional District…

          Also…money in state accounts cannot be used for federal races…so what they have on hand could only be used for things like polling not specific to fed. race for example.

    3. I believe that state legislative office holders cannot use their state accounts for federal campaigns.  I’m not 100% sure, so someone should check that.  But I think they can only use them to test viability.
