we’re amused to note the arrival of a new conservative blog focusing on “MA and beyond.” It’s running on soapblox, as we do, and it’s called … wait for it … Red Mass Group.
As far as I can tell, the site has no connection to the Catholic Church’s annual Red Mass, which is celebrated in honor of judges and lawyers. But the site is yet young …

Without even checking Wikpedia, I remember that red Kryptonite weakens and eventually in principle would kill Superman, gold would in principle remove his superpowers permanently, and green causes a random and bizarre plot complication.
<
p>
The “in principle” is because the comic series would be sort of unsustainable if Superman were killed or permanently desuperpowered.
<
p>
Let’s see how I did… Ok, I swapped red and green, and missed a whole lot of other colors which don’t seem to have come up all that often. Not so good.
demolisher says
Wow, this is really great.
<
p>
I think it is entirely appropriate to take it as flattery. Blue mass is a fantastic forum technically and in terms of the community energy level. As an opposing voice, I also find that the community is more tolerant of opposing views than I would really expect (many exceptions notwithstanding). Blue mass is something to be admired on many levels and certainly something to be imitated.
<
p>
I can only hope that red mass will be as good.
bob-neer says
Charmingly, before they launched Red Mass Group asked us if we would mind if they used the name. We said: no problem. Nice of them to ask, in my opinion.
peter-porcupine says
…but as I am not one of the editors, their views prevailed. I had wanted to call it ‘Red Specks!’
republican-rock-radio-machine says
They should have called it “The Red Eye”
<

because it sounds cool
amberpaw says
A true discussion requires many conversations and points of view. I hope Red Mass Group adds to real discussion, and is not a forum for bashing, shrill ad hominem attacks, the the like. What is really a positive about Blue Mass Group is the real effort at keeping information accurate, and discussion about ideas and facts, not personalities.
tim-little says
At least we have one responsible voice over there in the person of Peter Porcupine. We may not agree on the “issues,” but I certainly respect him for keeping the level of discourse high.
amberpaw says
And sunshine is not easy to come by in government, not anywhere, and certainly not in Massachusetts.
heartlanddem says
It just doesn’t sound right. Something’s off. Maybe they could try RedKansassGroup?, RedTexassGroup? Something with a ring of sustainability.
justin says
Maybe I have been out of MA and specifically the MA GOP (yes, I was a Republican when I was young and dumb) for too long, but when did they become so insane? I looked over that blog and I couldn’t see a difference between their views and the GOP down here in GA. And they think a radio station with Howie Carr, Rush Limbaugh and Michael Weiner Savage is liberal?
<

That was truly like a trip to Bizarro World. Scary times, indeed!

It was a play off Blue Man Group.

…until they ban me, of course.
<

I’ve been banned from every right wing blog and message board I’ve ever posted on. Starting from FreieRepublikaner.com Followed by LittleGreenGoofballs. Even a few gay sites.

..and then wonder huffily why they don’t tolerate free speech?
<

Very revealing. Explains a lot.
raj says
…my intention is to comment, as it is here. The net result of my commenting on virtually all right-wing sites is that I have been banned.
<
p>
The obvious point–which should be obvious to anyone, except possibly to you–is that right-wing sites don’t like dissenting opinions.
bob-neer says
Speaking as one trying to maintain a wide field of comments on a blog, it is a huge nuisance when people conflate “debate” with “insult.”

As to costs, it only costs $15 per month to run BMG, and now RMG, since they use the same platform, so I don’t think following the money will yield too much insight in this case at least.
goldsteingonewild says
raj says
…but that is referring only to direct costs. I would also include opportunity costs–it must take a little bit of time to come up with topics to post on, and to research those topics, and time is money.

“Is it true that most people living with HIV are Gay Men”
peter-porcupine says
The overwhelming number of people living with HIV and AIDS are in Africa, where it is almost exclusively heterosexual. That’s why little girs who are virgins are so often put up for sale, as they are ‘safe’.
<

Happy I could help!

“Is it true that most people living with HIV are Gay Men”
<

Peter you are 100% correct. What I meant to write was this . . .
<
p>
“Is it true that most people living with HIV in the US are Gay Men” I left out “In the US” which was my fault.
<
p>
But to finish my point – it is pretty common knowledge that gay men make up the majority of HIV cases in the United States. It’s a fact. It’s an undeniable fact.
<
p>
I’m sorry but sometimes the truth hurts. I’m not anti gay or anything….I just want these people to clean up their act. Start acting responsible. This is an easy thing to beat if we all use our heads.
<
p>
Common sense is POWER
sabutai says
When you asked the question earlier on this site, you were hoping for another ban to show off? Why not have the guts to put the information out there and join the discussion? Glad we didn’t take the inquiry seriously. You, sir, are the definition of troll.
republican-rock-radio-machine says
still waiting for a reply
<

I guess no one at the BMG wants to admit that of ALL the people living with HIV in the US 59% of them are gay men.
<
p>
So I wonder why people at the BMG have a hard time explaining this FACT.
<
p>
HHHMMMMMMMM
<
p>
call me a troller if you like……but for the record the people at the BMG can’t handle the FACTS. BABY

The best thing that could happen to the MA Democrats is for the MA Republican Party to become stronger. The MA Dems Victory 06′ campaign was pure show. For me Deval’s victory was a win for all of us who were disgusted with politics as usual, and not support for the MA Democratic Party. We are a one party state and as long as the state Dems do not feel compitition there will be no real improvment. Good luck to Red Mass Group.
trickle-up says
if Green-Rainbow became stronger. (Not exactly holding my breath, though.)
<
p>
I agree with you that some real competition would be good for all.
mojoman says
It would have been nice to have seen a different look than BMG, but as you say, imitation…and all of that.
<
p>
But if they do decide to change the name, Red Tide might work for them, or keeping with the marine theme, how about: Red Herring ?
That might be a winner right there.
<
p>
The problem with RMG having such a similar looking site to BMG, is if readers start to think of them as this, compared to this.
<
p>
On the plus side, RMG could have every last remaining MA GOP `dead ender’ log on to their site at once, and hold their next state convention remotely.
alexwill says
I had hoped it was a communist blog… 🙁

That would be Red Square… based, of course, in the offices next to Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe in “Our Fair City.” (Apologies to Click and Clack!)

…I guess that the title is true. The lefty blogosphere is rife with laughter over Andrew Shlafly’s new site conservapedia.com the conservative alternative to wikipedia.org.
<

There would be too many links to post regarding the laughter, but I’ll merely cite PZMyer at http://scienceblogs…. as a good starting point. The picture at http://www.conservap… is just precious.

I guess it’s true: imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Also, sources of humor.
