He could be making strong statements supporting Bush in Iraq, but that would be controversial, and could cost him somthing in the future. So, now Mitt Romney is out there rattling the saber against Iran to make himself look tough. Never mind that Romney didn’t lift a finger to divest Massachusetts pension fund money from companies that are “providing financial support to the Iranian regime or linked to Iran’s weapons programs and terrorist activities” in the four years he was Governor. In yet another flip-flop, now he is filled with self-righteous indignation that New York state hasn’t done so.
Never mind that Romney has little to no understanding of world politics or the military issues involved in a conflict in Iran. He thinks it’ll make him look tough, and it is a way to avoid talking about Iraq, the war that we’re already in.
But as the Boston Globe notes, even the conservatives down in South Carolina aren’t so easily fooled:
One Republican who attended Romney’s speech, Bob Myers, a 68-year-old from Spartanburg who works in construction and real estate, said he’s not sold on a policy of military threats and isolation alone.
“Frankly, and I can’t speak for the nation, but I think that we’re going to have to negotiate through Iran,” Myers said, adding that military action has to still be on the table.
Then again since nothing Romney says has any meaning, perhaps we shouldn’t be worried.
