I’m a bit surprised (and disappointed) that Jerry McNerny doesn’t seem to be on the Energy & Commerce Committee.
Gore leased out his land (30 yr lease) in the 70s to a mining company. There is no evidence that the mine significantly exceeded environmental guidelines.

Now, if you think the environmental guidelines are too lax, by all means lobby Congress and the EPA to tighten them up. I’ll join you in that fight. (That is, if we can even find the EPA – Bush is shutting it down methodically.)

Until then, unless you never use products containing zinc (pipe organ pipes in your church, brass on your bedstead, zinc oxide on your sunburned nose, this essential mineral in your fortified breads, cereals and vitamin tabs…), I’m not sure you have much of a strawman to stand on here.

The issue regarding mineral extraction rights leases is not that the minerals are extracted, but the way in which they are extracted. Whether they are done in a relatively environmentally benign manner, or in a relatively evironmentally dangerous manner. The manner can be handled in the lease.
