It’s not like this big news or anything, but she really is completely bonkers.
As you know, she used some very nasty language at the CPAC last weekend, and John Edwards’ campaign manager, ex-congressman David Bonior, responded by sending out a fundraising appeal.
The following now appears on Ann Coulter’s website, after a reprint of the email from Bonior:
IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO DIVERT BONIOR FROM HIS PRINCIPAL PASTIME WHICH IS FRONTING FOR ARAB TERRORISTS.
Whoa. In some places, that’s called libel. I smell a lawsuit….
The always excellent Editor & Publisher has picked up the Coulter story, and has been quizzing UPI about whether syndicating her column is really such a terrific idea. I love this exchange (emphasis mine):
Universal Press Syndicate distributes Coulter’s weekly newspaper column. A spokesperson there told E&P today that Universal would not comment about something Coulter said outside her column. The syndicate also declined to comment on what steps it might be taking if Coulter had used the “N” word instead of the “F” word.
Sounds like E&P is asking exactly the right questions, since it’s pretty obvious that there’s a double standard here. Here’s hoping they keep the pressure on, not only with UPI but with other media outlets that give Coulter’s rubbish the oxygen it desperately needs.
UPDATE: Some conservative bloggers have had enough. The comments on these posts are fascinating — there is huge division among the self-described conservatives over what to do.

The issue is not whether Coulter is bonkers (which, like beauty, I suppose, is in the eyes of the beholder), but why she continues to be so popular on the right.

You might enjoy (or at least get some insight out of) Don Hazen’s opinion piece.

In point of fact, Hazen quotes Greenwald’s excellent piece so much that you might just read that instead!

…Coulter hasn’t lost her mind. It’s the people who are supporting her who should be denigrated and tossed into the abbys. She’s someone playing a character, like Marion Morrison playing John Wayne.

It’s the people who are supporting her character who should be villified. Who are those people? Who was sponsoring the “Conservative” PAC convention that she was paid to speak to? And who were the people who paid to attend that convention? Those are the people who are to be villified. They are the people who are paying the Ann Coultergeist freak to say what she says. She’s only saying what they want to pay her to hear.

If I was half the actor as she is, I could do the same thing. Except that I have a bit more self-respect as die Coultergeist.
