Marty’s second legislative passion involves taking periodic Congressional junkets to international hotspots like Iraq and Afghanistan to report to Bay State residents what we already know by reading the newsapaper, watching the tv news, or attending the funeral of a friend or a loved one–i.e. the war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan is going very badly!!!
Thanks for the news flashes, Marty! Those combat fatigues you wore at your most recent news conference at Logan Airport looked so REAL-TO-LIFE, I actually believed, for a minute, that you had signed up to join the Army Reserves or National Guard upon your return to America.
Let’s hold the Democrats who run to succeed Marty Meehan to a higher standard of constituent service and dedication to improving the social and economic lives of 5th District residents. Paul Tsongas was a Congressman and later a Senator from Lowell who always prioritized the social and economic needs of his constitutents (particularly their need for self-supporting jobs at self-supporting wages), while simulataneously maintaining his attention to the national and international policy concerns of the day. The voters of the 5th District should hold all the candidates who are running to succeed Congressman Meehan to this “Tsongas Standard” of high quality local constituent service and profound concern for citizens’ economic security.
Finally, Good Luck to you, Congressman Meehan, in your new position at UMass Lowell. Undoubtedly, the headaches that will result from managing university and state politics will be assuaged by now finding yourself only a one hour car ride away from Foxboro Stadium each (home game) Sunday during the NFL season.
