I just heard, unofficially, about another round of buyouts at the Globe. Among those hanging up their keyboards are Eileen McNamara, and Charlie Radin.

The most distressing news about the layoffs and buyouts at The Boston Globe has been the continued decimation of its international news coverage with the closing of most of its international bureaus and the reassignment or lay off these international correspondents.

I understand the economics behind the move to substantially reduce The Globe’s international reporting. Unfortunately, the only two reasons I could persuade myself for purchasing the Boston Globe, over the last ten years, was its prize-winning international coverage (e.g. Kevin Cullen in Ireland/England, and the late Elizabeth Neuffer in Yugoslavia/Bosnia)and its excellent sports page.

When Bob Ryan and Jackie MacMullen retire from The Globe, the upside will be that I can start saving $5.50 per week.
