I am getting pretty good responding to the objections when people first are confronted with the idea. In fact I think this is a perfect exchange – my questioners are respectful and intelligent and ask good questions, and I only misspell ‘complementary’ twice.
To BMGers, let’s think about this New Hampshire civil union bill for a second: Now, it’s already only going to be for civil unions, right? Not marriage. So, I ask you, why not add those seven words? As I said to Rep. Splaine:
I hope you have a chance to return to read the argument I lay out above, and i hope that you will add a clause to the civil union bill so that it gives all the rights, benefits and protections except the right to conceive children together. I think this would be forward thinking and help New Hampshire couples have their civil unions recognized in other states and by the federal government. That is much more important to actual couples than the right to attempt ridiculously risky and unnecessary genetic engineering. Affirm that “love makes a family”, protect couples from exploitation by disreputable fertility doctors, protect children from dangerous experiments, and affirm that all marriages have a right to conceive, and help same-sex couples nationwide, with those seven extra words.

Looks like there is a competing civil union bill by a Republican, Steve Vaillancourt, that is still in committee. It is much more detailed, with specifics about how civil unions would interact with the rest of NH laws. It also doesn’t say that it gives “all the rights of marriage”, only the protections and benefits. HB 905

Here’s the text of Rep Splaine’s much more general “spousal union” bill that goes too far. HB 437

BMG, as long as we are talking about civil unions, isn’t it a good idea to stipulate that they do not have conception rights? Do you want them to have conception rights or don’t you?

the spousal union bill does not go too far, you do. again. and again. and again. you’re not even getting mileage out of your hateful approach over at RMG. that should tell you something.

since I started eggandsperm.org in 2004, the year of Kaguya’s creation and the year the PCBE recommended that Congress enact an egg and sperm law. Two years is nothing compared to how long other civil rights issues took before people even acknowledged there was an issue, and preserving each person’s natural conception rights is a civil rights issue. Stopping genetic engineering is a civil rights issue. As Gandhi said, first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. Well, I’m getting through the ignorance now and getting laughed at, even fought a little bit. So that’s encouraging. I’m not about to get discouraged when people react with defensiveness or misunderstand me, whether they are blue or red.

Now come up with a Hitler comment and you win a prize!
(As you can tell, I am still at the laughing stage. If you are encouraged by universal ridicule, I think you have found the right moonbat cause).
