The special election to fill outgoing Senator Robert Travaglini’s seat is coming sooner than had been anticipated. The primary (which is almost certainly the only election that matters) is set for May 29, the day after Memorial Day, which is about nine weeks from now. The general election will be on June 26.

Both Petruccelli and Toomey voted against the gay marriage ammendment, while Trav voted for it.

A Google News Archives search didn’t turn up anything on Dan Rizzo in that regard, but I did find that he bucked the Catholic Church by pushing for restrictions on the redevelopment of property and that he was a strong supporter of Andrea Cabral.

Looks like a good opportunity to chip off a vote for the good guys.

is that, since Petruccelli and Toomey both voted in the ConCon last time around as House members, either of them moving to the Senate doesn’t change much. What then matters is who takes over the vacant House seat if either of them wins the Senate race. A real domino effect. I have no idea who’d be likely to succeed Petruccelli in East Boston. But it seems quite likely to me that Toomey’s Cambridge seat would be filled by a strong opponent of the amendment.

After the recent ConCon vote I looked at the unfortunately too-short list of legislators who had voted against the marriage amendment and in favor of releasing the health care amendment from committee, and noted that list included every single representative and senator whose district I had ever lived in (about 12) except one: Travaglini. Toomey was one of the others (I lived in his district Feb 2005 – summer 2006), who voted the right way IMO on both.

I wholeheartedly support Rep. Anthony Petruccelli in his bid to succeed Sen. Travaglini in representing the First Suffolk-Middlesex district. Anthony has served as a State Rep since 1999 representing East Boston, a diverse, working class community.

In full disclosure, Anthony has asked me to blog for his campaign, a duty which I proudly accepted. He first made a positive impression on me when he sent me a letter, totally out of the blue, congratulating me on a college scholarship I received from the East Boston Kiwanis club. No one disputes how connected to our community Anthony has been.

Starting with that letter, I have always felt comfortable calling Rep. Petruccelli’s office or stopping him on the street and having discussions about issues that were important to me.
<

I remember calling his office from my dorm room out at UMass Amherst and leaving him a message asking him to vote in favor of increasing funding to my school. He called me back within a half hour and we spoke at length about the tuition increases, fee increases, cutting back of library hours, etc., and we got that 10 million dollar increase.

And what’s more is that Rep. Petruccelli has called on my parents, who are active in our East Boston community, as well as myself in seeking our advice or opinions, another way in which he stays connected with his constituency.

Anthony is just a great guy. He’ll talk your ear off, which is fine because he knows what he’s talking about. IMHO he’s a rising star in Massachusetts politics. I hope everyone will visit his website and give this guy some serious consideration. He will be actively participating in contributing to this blog in the weeks and months ahead, so get your questions ready! đŸ™‚

Looking forward to hearing more from Rep. Petruccelli. Glad he’ll be joining us.

That the day after Memorial Day strikes me as a pretty crappy day for an election if you’re interested in getting people to come out to vote.

after all, now you’ve got a 3 consecutive day GOTV effort!
