The Pew Center’s recent report on trends in public opinion takes a hammer to long-held ideas in the conventional wisdom. Not only are the ranks of Democratic voters growing but also the public wants a greater role for government in providing healthcare, even if it means raising taxes.
Despite being divided on government size, Americans are verwhelmingly in favor of the U.S. government guaranteeing health insurance for all citizens, even if it means raising taxes. Two-thirds of the public (66%) – including a majority of those who say they would prefer a smaller government (57%) – favor government-funded health insurance for all citizens.
