Stating that “it’s time to put some truth and justice back in the Justice Department,” Niki Tsongas, candidate for Congress in the 5th Congressional District, today called for the “immediate resignation” of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
“This happened on the Attorney General’s watch and with his active involvement,” said Tsongas. “First he attributed the mistakes to his subordinates and a busy schedule. Now it turns out that he actively participated in the strategy of the White House to fire eight U.S. Attorneys even though no credible reasons have been provided for their dismissal.”
“This past Friday, emails revealed that Gonzales participated in a meeting on November 27th in which he personally confirmed the decision to dismiss the U.S. Attorneys for what appears to be politics not job performance,” stated Tsongas. “Seven of the firings came within just 10 days of that meeting.”
Tsongas, an attorney, added that the Attorney General’s resignation would, “also help to resolve a conflict that is distracting us from other important matters – Iraq, healthcare and economic competitiveness.”
Tsongas said, if given the opportunity to represent the district, she intended to go to Washington to help restore accountability and competence in government. “Unfortunately,” she said in her conclusion, “this isn’t anything new to this Administration. It’s politics over competence. Look at FEMA and Katrina, post war planning in Iraq, and environmental disregard. This Administration has a leadership deficit and its time to hold them accountable.”
Niki Tsongas is a candidate for the 5th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Representative Martin T. Meehan.

But I’m distracted by the other issues: you know, Iraq, healthcare, and economic competitiveness.

Consider this mainly meant to outwiegh the other comments on this thread. I guess my reaction on seeing the headline was along the lines of “Well, of course, I should hope so. Why would anyone running to represent us in DC not call for his resignation?” At this point, it’s akin to coming out in favor of cute puppies.

Tsongas spoke for them all about the Attorney General. When will the first debate be? Will Tsongas want to debate with Eileen?
