Uh oh.

March 21, 2007 By David

From AP:

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Wednesday visited the doctor with his wife, Elizabeth, who is recovering from breast cancer. He announced they would hold a news conference in their hometown on Thursday to discuss her health.

The campaign refused to answer any questions about what the Edwardses learned at the doctor’s appointment or how it might affect his candidacy. Edwards had cut short a trip to Iowa Tuesday night to be with his wife Wednesday but still attended a barbecue fundraiser later in the evening in their hometown of Chapel Hill, N.C.

If they’ve gone home and are holding a press conference, it doesn’t seem likely that the news is good.  The article elaborates:

The campaign had said that Mrs. Edwards had a follow-up appointment to a routine test she had Monday. The campaign explained that she had similar follow-ups in the past but they always resulted in a clean bill of health.

Seems unlikely that he’d call a press conference to announce “status quo unchanged.”  Let us all hope that Mrs. Edwards has not had a recurrence.

and they’ve got little kids, too.  my heart goes out to anyone dealing with that disease.  i hope their announcement tomorrow has a silver lining along the lines of “early stage” or “drug-sensitive”.

if the editors don’t mind, i’d like to indulge now in an ad hominem attack on cancer:  cancer, you suck!  fu@k you!  watch me laugh as i watch you die, cell by cell, in a bath of noxious pink chemo.  feel the sizzle of the radiation, you bastard.  die you bastard, die!

that Edwards will withdraw from the race tomorrow.  No link, no source, so take ’em for what they’re worth.

That would be very sad if she were sick and very  understandable if he dropped out. Despite the fact that I don’t support him as of yet, he certainly has added something to this race so far – and you can’t complain about that. I hope he doesn’t have to drop out, but as long as she’s okay. Cancer sucks.

As much as I have a lot of reservations about his candidacy I do feel he is a sincere public servant and I would happily vote for him if it came down to him or Hillary or him and one of the right wing nut jobs, I am leaning Obama currently. That said I do hope for he best for Mrs. Edwards who has been incredibly courageous, cancer is no laughing matter and certainly not a political or trivial matter either so my thoughts and prayers are with the Edwards’s. If he withdrew that would be entirely understandable although I would lament his abscence from the race.

My thoughts and prayers go to the Edwards family.  Politics comes second to something like this.

    Breaking News from the Globe
“Democrat John Edwards is suspending his presidential campaign, and may drop out completely because his wife has suffered a recurrence of breast cancer that sickened her in 2004, a Democratic source said today. Edwards and his wife are expected to make an official announcement within minutes”

Listening to the news conference now. Edwards announces that his campaign will go on, and go on strongly. I consider that good news.
