Barack Obama will be speaking in his first pubic appearance in Boston since his rally with Deval this Friday at 6 at Boston University’s Agganis Arena. The event is a fundraiser for his presidential campaign, but in an unusual move it is geared towards students, who can contribute a low-dollar amount to his campaign for a ticket to the event.
Non-students are welcome at the event, but the contribution for a ticket is $230 for non-students, while only $23 for students. The event is being billed as the kick for the students for Obama campaign nationally, and is followed on Saturday by a nationwide Obama campaign day of community service, to illustrate that the campaign is dedicated to making a differance in communities not just after the election, but during as well.
I think this is an interesting move by the campaign. They are clearly trying to build on their current advantage among young people and college students. I’m not sure if this is a wise course in the long run, since young people and students are clearly not usually a well off bunch, but the strategy seems to be paying off thus far, as I understand several thousand student tickets have already been sold.
Full disclosure: I am a BU undergraduate who has been doing some volunteer work promoting this event.
