From sco: What the heck is this about?
As speculation mounts over DiMasi’s future, Rogers has been laying the groundwork for what many on Beacon Hill believe will be a succession fight. His major rival is Representative Ronald Mariano, a Quincy Democrat.
First I’ve heard of it. Where’s Sal going?
BTW, Rogers vs. Mariano is not an especially inspiring choice, is it? Hope you like the Big Dig Culture:
“A $1,000 lunch at Capital Grille. Do you think that’s right? Do you think your constituents eat at Capital Grille?” Wu asked.
“Well, most of the money that I raise is from the industry,” Mariano said.
Oh, well no problem then! Carry on. I feel completely confident in Mr. Mariano’s ability to look out for the public interest.
Update: In response to the speculation in the comments that DiMasi might be pushed out in a palace coup of sorts, I think it pretty much goes without saying that Sal would be better than the thoroughly compromised Rogers and Mariano. What a joke that would be.
Is this the price of Sal’s victory on marriage? It had better not be.

If DiMasi goes, we need someone like Rushing as Speaker. None of these other creeps, thanks.

My money was always on Rogers and O’Flaherty as leaders of the Palace Coup – but Mariano fits right in too.

That certainly would be interesting. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sal go, even though he helped big time on marriage equality, however it would have to be for someone in favor of the Municipal Partnership Act… and I somehow doubt either of those two would be behind it.

Still, though, this is interesting. There’s clearly more to this story than meets the Paper of “Record.”

While DiMasi is sort of my age [as in an aging baby boomer] he is married to a truly lovely and remarkable woman, and has elementary school aged children.

As a practical matter, the Speaker only earns about $90,000.00 a year. See: http://news.bostonhe… which gives DiMasi’s earnings [thank you Boston Herald].

If DiMasi’s anti Municipal Partnership Act stance, and work on the health care “revolution” are indications, DiMasi is courting himself a transition to higher paid work that is not in the Golden Goldfish Bowl [also known as Beacon Hill]. As you may recall, Thomas Finneran went from earning $85,000.00 as speaker to earning about $500,000.00 by riding the revolving door out of the Golden Goldfish Bowl.

It is true that Ronald Mariaon, who represents the 3rd Norfolk [Quincy, Holbrook] has a large warchest for someone who has been running unopposed. He began this year with $209,888.00, raised $101,877.00, and only spent $43,818.00.

Mariano also voted in favor of changing the term for House members from two years to four years. Forethought?

I would chalk this up to Frank Phillip’s imaination or own wishes for a more intriguing story!

All indications are that Sal is staying.
