Tomorrow the Senate Health Committee, chaired by Senator Kennedy, begins hearings on Bush’s nomination of Dr. James Holsinger to be Surgeon General. The nomination has drawn fierce opposition from the GLBT community for two principal reasons. First, he authored a pseudo-scientific anti-gay diatribe in 1991, entitled “Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality.” The paper betrays deep-seated homophobic bias that colors his medical judgment. Second, he helped found an “ex-gay” ministry in Lexington, KY which claims to “cure” homosexuals. So-called conversion therapy aimed at turning gays into straights has been roundly condemned by the American Psychiatric Association among others. His views on the subject of homosexuality are so far out of the scientific mainstream as to expose yet another attempt by Bush to inject politics and religion into public health policy.
Folks should call Senators Kennedy and Kerry and urge them to vote against confirming homo-hating Holsinger.
