Speaking of Chappaquiddick, did i ever tell you the rumor I have heard on more than one occasion that seems to make sense. And is casts Kennedy in a different light.
Supposedly Kennedy was with another woman, (whose name I know, a member of one of thousands Irish Catholic Boston families with ‘connections’.)
Mary Joe had left the party early and passed out in back of car with blanket over her. They didn’t know she was there. After car went off bridge Teddy got mystery gal back to town and then called his cousin. Then they found Mary Jo.
That story actually makes sense.
But, what do I know?

Bob Coughlin got his new gig because he had one of the greatest fairy godfathers of them all. Jack Connors. Connor’s, along with some of Deval’s people lobbied hard for Coughlin. It is unclear if Connor?s is actually related to Coughlin. But there are rumors.
Jack Hart saw the writing on the wall and withdrew. That stopped all these Boston reps and councilors from preparing their special election run. That would have been fun.

Ned Johnson has probably been showing his mean streak causing the recent Peyton Place happenings on Devonshire street. The man who walks quietly around the city turned his father’s small firm into an international power house. He did this primarily through investing in technology back when others weren’t. The back office he built was the industry’s showpiece. And Peter Lynch didn’t hurt on the retail side.
Before that things were so bad that it is rumored that in the 1970s John Hancock turned down an offer to purchase 25% of the company.
So now Ned wants to clear the decks for his daughter to run the company. Like most third generation running the show, she plays not to lose. Plus she won’t do the meet and greet that is necessary with institutional investors. Her people skills are not her best traits.
In a business where the primary job is to investigate other businesses Ned should know better than others that the power handoff to off-spring not up to the job is like pouring gasoline on yourself and lighting a match.
Or perhaps he knows this and just doesn’t give a crap.

The sports radio thing is great. Big business (Entercom) and experience programmers (Jason Wolfe) are showing a couple of tools that nobody is safe. The Dale and Arnold replacement rumor is junk, but it gives d&C the false confidence to jump ship for bigger $$$ thinking, as the new station will, they will kick arnold’s butt.
Of course dale arnold won’t be put in the drive time slot.
Sports radio is bigger than one show. These guys can easily be replaced.

How about Dan Conley letting Mayor Menino give false info about a homicide and then correcting him in the press?
As I understand it, there are two factions within the Boston Police Homicide Unit. The Michelle McPhee faction (they call her before anybody) and the Dan Conley faction.
Iran and Iraq as they once said.
C?mon Michael Flaherty, you know you can win this.

2. I expect to see a D&C deal done at EEI. Win-win. Maybe even Callahan comes back during Jimmython to say “I had throat cancer, not laryngitis, and I’m fine thanks to the good people at Dana Farber.”

3. How much bigger is the McPhee faction? Why would anyone side with Conley unless blood relation?

4. My take on Ned J is different. Doesn’t have full confidence in Abby. So instead of the usual challenge — finding great leadership talent — he has 10x harder challenge (finding great talent that won’t mind that he’s passing the reins to his daughter). He’s cleaning people out for the right reason (not great at their jobs), but he can’t get best candidates with status quo….
never mind.
Think about this combination of events.

One day after the Dennis and Callahan news hits the Herald, CBS radio and Don Imus reach a settlement, and WABC is rumored to be ready to hire him.
<

Don Imus was a cash cow for WFAN (all sports) and made a ton of money for WTKK. After Dennis and Callahan and their METCO gorrilla problem, you can make the argument that Imus on WEEI would be less offensive and much more profitable.
Those four stories (make that bombshells) each deserve their own Pulitzer. I cannot understand why this Diary is not bumped to the top of the front page. Ernie Boch, III . . . you are the man. You are a man, right?
