Now that we know that Jay Kaufman is not running for Senator Havern’s recently vacated seat, it’s pretty safe to assume that Jim Marzilli (who is running) is a lock has a very good chance to win (but we should all work hard to make sure a solid progressive gets elected). I don’t know who else could put forth a substantive challenge to a well-liked 17-year Representative.
So the logical next question is: who runs for Jim Marzilli’s house seat? The district covers a big chunk of Arlington (where Marzilli lives) and a smaller chunk of West Medford.
Wait a minute… doesn’t David live in Marzilli’s district?
UPDATE: There, now I take nothing for granted. NOW can we discuss the subject of David for State Rep? (No need for a last name…)

Marzilli faces a difficult race for the senate seat. He might win here on BMG, but he needs to win in a lot of places where he has never run before. There’s alot of territory in Lexington, Woburn, Burlington, and Billerica that needs to be won for Jim – not to mention the confusion of having James Miceli on the ballot for the congressional seat in Billerica.

As has been said before, Arlington has a large portion of voters, and Lexington will probably go very strongly for him, especially if he picks up progressive endorsements. So far, the only other person in the race is Charles Murphy, whose only portion of the district is Burlington. Even if Gonsalves gets in (from Woburn, who ran against Havern last time), I would expect Marzilli to do just as well, especially if Gonsalves and Murphy split some of the vote in the northern part of the district.

excuse me while i gamely try to hide my smirk. he will get nowhere except perhaps his neighborhood in woburn. this is the guy who burst through the house doors a few years ago shouting “i’m a freshman and i’m gonna show all you idiots how it should be done!” what a maroon. if someone knows of something steller he’s done in the few intervening years, please let me know. otherwise, it’s best that he stick to serving the good people of woobun.

The last I heard there were a few more people running. I don’t think you can assume that Marzilli has a lock on the seat.

But I think the point of this post was to point out that David lives in the district. Sure, Marzilli might not win. But if he does, I mean, the draft Al Gore movement doesn’t seem to be going anywhere… how about a draft David Kravitz movement?
pablo says
Arlington politics is quite spirited, and I wonder if someone from West Medford could come in and rack up enough votes to win the seat. There would likely be a spirited battle between the tribal factions in Arlington that will make your head spin.

I think David Kravitz could end up becoming the Paul Potts of the State House…

You don’t know the inspiring story of Britain’s most lovable opera singer? The guy is downright adorable! Opera isn’t just about Puccini and fat Italian guys, David…

Since when are State Reps the only viable candidates? Honestly, I’m disapointed to see such little talk about one of the more intriguing candidates in this race, Jeevan Ramapriya.

Jeevan is just the right blend of tested experience and breath of fresh air. I don’t think we need more of the same, but rather someone who can bring new ideas and a new perspective. So far it looks like that candidate is Rampriya.

How would the Assistant Chief of Staff for a State Senate DINO be a clear choice for progressives? Especially when one of the candidates has been a hard working advocate for progressive causes?

If Marzilli wins, does anyone know what would likely be the date for the election of his replacement?
david says
since the general election for Havern’s Senate seat is in December, I’d imagine that the primary for any state rep seat that opens up as a result would be a couple of months after that. Maybe February or March 2008?
pablo says
You are in the ballpark. The House would set the date, but they need at least 10 weeks between the vacancy and the primary (end of February) and another month to the general election (end of March). This could be lots of fun, as the town election is the first Saturday in April, and the presidential primary is March 4. They could run the house primary on the same day – then hold the general in early April.
david says
a potentially much higher turnout than would otherwise be expected, if it’s on prez primary day. Conversely, if it’s near then but not on the same day, election fatigue probably results in an even lower turnout than you’d normally see.
