Deval Patrick has ousted Christopher R. Anderson as chair of the state Board of Education.
In a three player trade, he sent Anderson to the Dodgers for a shortstop… no, wait.
In a three player trade, board member Henry Thomas resigned, opening a seat on the board. Patrick will appoint Paul Reville to the board and will give him the gavel. Current chair and Romney appointee Christopher Anderson will remain on the board. The governor selects the chair from the members of the board.
The Globe reports that Anderson said his dismissal as chair was “politically motivated.”

I only know Anderson from his embarrassingly silly op-eds during the health care wars. You know anything about Reville? Or Fred Clark, for that matter?

Reville is a thoughtful academic who enjoys being in the middle of policy debates. He is firmly committed to standards-based education. He does have a reputation for being a little preachy, but he is able to get people from opposing sides into a room and have an interesting and intelligent discussion.

I agree with him on the importance of standards-based education, I disagree with his support for high-stakes testing. Reville will be at his best if Deval can get one or two more thoughtful people on the board who are comfortable with Deval’s direction for public schools but have different ideas on how to move things forward.

All in all, Reville is a good facilitator who has what it takes to do a very good job as chair of the Board of Education.

hey, is that the first time we’ve agreed on a k-12 issue?
pablo says
We probably agree on more than we disagree. However, we just don’t write about those things very often, as the disagreements are more interesting reading.

good for the Gov, the High Tech Council crowd are the one note wonders of “no new taxes”. Then they wonder where our “educated workforce” is.
