We entered this weekend with great momentum. Over the last week I was honored to receive the endorsement of the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, Siglo 21 and Lowell City Councilors Bud Caulfield and Rita Mercier. Those endorsements, combined with the energy that is being generated from the 100 hour tour, have everyone at the campaign in high spirits going into the last few days.
I know this community is very engaged with politics, but I still want to urge anyone who lives in the district to vote on Tuesday. If you aren’t sure where to vote, go here. When Barney Frank endorsed me, he said that this election will be viewed nationally as a referendum on the 2006 midterm elections. We all need to send a message to Washington that this country wants positive change on issues like the war in Iraq, health care and global warming. We can send that message by showing up to vote.
Thank you,
Niki Tsongas

When name recognition and deep $$$ pockets substitute for specific, ambitious policy ideas and a commitment to constituent service in determining the next U.S. Representative for the 5th District, we should all mourn the death of progressive politics in a MA Congressional District that deserves a U.S. Represenative whose credentials extend beyond a familiar, if beloved, last name.
Niki Tsongas ran the “safe campaign,” never challenging the entrenched political and economic interests in areas such as health care that are making it impossible for working class people to eke out an existence here in Massachusetts. Her endorsement of the Mass. health care individual insurance mandate as a model for national health care reform represents a galling short-sightedness and distressing embrace about a highly controversial and costly state health care reform initiative that has yet to be evaluated and leave significant numbers of MA residents uninsured or underinsured.
Finally, who really cares that Barney Frank has endorsed the candidacy of Nikki Tsongas? Does Barney Frank have some special insight into the character and talents of the 5th Congressional candidates and their respective abilities to serve the interests of the 5th District constituents? Has Barney Frank ever spent more than three hours of his day in Lowell, Lawrence, or Methuen? I doubt it. Take heart Mr. Eldridge, Mr. Feingold, and Ms. Donoghue; Barney Frank also endorsed Barbara Ackerman over Mike Dukakis and Frank Hatch over Ed King in the 1978 Governor's race.
