How you achieve what you want is inevitably characterized by what you did to get it. Means not only don't justify ends but, as human beings, our means become part of our ends. And the means and methods and culture of casino gambling, no matter how profitable, will impact the very marrow and nature of our state and social character.
Maybe we should work a little harder and seek a better means of getting those improved highways, better schools and lower property taxes so that down the road we can proudly look ourselves in the mirror and our children can see that a just and noble and proud society is achieved through just and noble and proud means and not through the quickest economic fix or most expedient pathway to an uncertain destiny without proper regard to the impact on our body politic as a whole which, I believe, is a desirable end in itself.
