As for me, I cannot take another day off from my work in my own office. I have no “W2 income” – if I do not work, I do not earn an income.
If I do not get paid for the work I do, I cannot pay my bills. So although I do close my office to testify on bills such as h4191 that I feel could save lives – no one covers my costs to do that.
Similarly, when I make legislative visits on behalf of the court-appointed bar, no one pays for my time, my parking, or my lunch.
Volunteerism is fueled by either passionate concern – or appreciation. Good thing I am long on passionate concern.
