Last January, some of us on the Newbury Democratic Town Committee formed a sub-committee to explore presenting a documentary film series. The idea was to show films for audiences large or small, some with speakers, some with discussion groups, others to give us the chance to meet each other and have a good time. In May, we threw a party, inviting town committee chairs and others from the area for an evening of food, drink and trailers of a number of films we had previewed. Since then, there has been conversation about sharing the responsibility of planning for and showing the films among whichever town committees want to participate.
The goal for our committee is to not only raise funds for our representatives; we aspire to be visible, accessible and approachable to both the Democratic community, and to the community at large. By showing films, we also seek to educate the electorate so they can make informed (read: Democratic) choices.
This weekend we will show the film Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, a film about how families and communities struggle to survive in a Wal-Mart world. We are extremely pleased that former Governor Michael Dukakis has accepted our invitation to be our keynote speaker. Who better to rally the troops for our first event than the champion of the grass roots, Michael Dukakis?
Please consider coming up to Newbury Saturday evening (a very pretty destination in the autumn!), to hear Governor Dukakis, see a terrific film, educate yourself, and meet some fellow Dems (and maybe some who aren’t!). Be a sponsor and attend a pre-screening reception with the Governor. Details can be found here. Or, go to MKTix to purchase tickets with a credit card. Details are also posted in “Upcoming Events” in the side column to your left.
If you’d like to be on a list to receive notice of future events, have an interest in working with us, or have any questions at all, let us know by sending an email to NewburyTickets@gmail.com.
and The Duke to boot, wow. But as you say in this post of course he would attend a great grassroots happening like this. That’s what it was all about for him.

I read that when asked by the three potential nominees for the Democratic ticket in the governor race last time that he told them all: you have to go out to the grass roots in MA, it’s the only way that we win as a party. Happily, Deval is the only one that took that advice. He shocked us all in the Democratic caucus sweeps early on in that race and the rest is history.

Thanks for promoting a great movie about a very important cause: America. Nothing is worse than what Wal-Mart is doing to this country. Many things are just as bad, but nothing is worse. And nobody calls them on it.
I don’t know if anything is worse than what WalMart is doing to this country, because I don’t know to what you are referring. In your opinion, what is WalMart doing to this country?
for you to get informed. Watch the movie or check out the PBS Frontline: Is Wal-Mart good for America? which is available online for you right now.

I’d like to know your thoughts on the movie and the Frontline piece after you’ve seen them, especially the movie.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing it.
I’m very interested in talking to you about future documentaries, and I’ll definitely write to you. If I weren’t going to be out of state this weekend, I’d be there.
It would be wonderful to see Governor Dukakis. What a great governor! What a great guy!
Good luck!
I’ve been looking for an opportunity to see this movie — I’m going to bring a friend who is and “unconvinced liberal” — that is, a frequent WM shopper…. who doesn’t have much money and can’t resist the prices…
<

I’m also very interested to hear the former governor.
<

thanks for putting this together and I look forward to future films
The Wal-Mart movie, not available at Wal-mart of course, is one of the most important documentaries you and especially your friend will ever see. Please try to watch it, it’s very difficult to watch and I think they go to far at the end. It’s very hard to watch the last segment so be forewarned.

This movie was made by Robert Greenwald. He’s the same guy who did Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War and the documentary on how Bush stole Florida, Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election . A muckraker in the best sense of the word.

More muckrakers, less muck!
to see the Greenwald film, it is available as a DVD.
All of his documentaries are great and cover important
subjects that the “MSM” has not adequately covered.
I recommend this event! đŸ™‚
I should also mention that there’s a strong push for a BuyLocal campaign in neighboring Newburyport and we’ve been working together to promote both our events–ours on the 13th and theirs the next day. They are going to be showing the film Independent America on Sunday, the 14th, at the Newburyport Public Library. You can find information at the bottom of the same web page–the one that says HERE in my post (please don’t make me figure out the HTML for a live link again!)-for both their event and organization.

Thanks for all your posts and recommendations! We are very excited!

No, actually, I meant the link in my post that leads to our event website (the word “HERE”), which not only has info about our event, but also has all the info about the Independent America screening on the 14th. From there you can link to supportNBPT to find out more about that organization. (They’ve been having problems updating their web site, and the film is not posted there.)
Is everyone sufficiently confused? đŸ˜‰
…embarrassed himself in 1988, when he popped out of a tank wearing a helmet, looking like a mushroom.
1.4 million of your fellow citizens work on the plantation everyday and countless slaves outside this country with no hope of advancement, just a life of barely adequate sustenance.

But The Duke wore a funny looking hat for like five minutes like twenty years ago.

Get your priorities straight buddy. How mean and callous we have become in this country.

I think it’s shocking that you would post this comment in this thread about such an important national issue and a great grass roots event.
…your response to my comment is supposed to mean something, but I’ll be darned if I can figure out what that something is.
that your confused. See ya round, peace.
..easily could be the text book definition of how to commit political suicide…hilarious!
His response to that horrible rape question was probably the final nail in the coffin.
Critique a debate performance from 20 years ago just remember that Dukakis couldn’t be trusted by corporations like this to play ball. Bush? Money in the bank. What a travesty that was in retrospect. I guarantee you if King George I went down in that election then the son would never have plagued this country.
around on the floor thinking about a photo op from twenty years reserve a chuckle or two for 2.5 Billion dollars of you own tax money that goes to support modern slavery and enrich the bottom line in Bentonville. Policies brought to you directly by the guy who didn’t wear a funny looking hat in that election. That’s really hilarious. You have a great sense of humor.
