Wow, that independent, jes'-folks Jim Ogonowski sure is independent from the national GOP, huh? A real maverick, right? Like on SCHIP!
House Republicans quietly distributed a survey by David Winston, who is close to Boehner, that came to a different conclusion. It said critics of the legislation can win the public debate if they say they favor “covering uninsured children without expanding government coverage to adults, illegal immigrants and those who already have insurance….” A copy of the poll was obtained by The Associated Press.
Ogonowski opposes the SCHIP proposal, saying one of its provisions would open the program to children of illegal immigrants.
“We do not allow illegal immigrants to steal from poor children,” said Barney Keller, an Ogonowski spokesman.
Calling this regurgitation is an insult to regurgitators everywhere. Indeed, Ogonowski's adherence to this daffy talking point is all over his hilariously incoherent op-ed in the Eagle-Tribune. It's a classic.
Look, let's just be honest: The only prayer Ogonowski has in this race is to distance himself as far as possible from the politically-toxic national GOP. But this just shows how little independence from the national GOP he'd actually show in Congress.
