I am announcing my Candidacy for the 2nd Middlesex Democratic State Committee. My name will appear on ballots in the 2nd Middlesex Senatorial District including Wards in Somerville, Medford, Winchester and Woburn on February 5th, 2008.
Let me introduce myself to you;
I grew up in Medford where I attended Saint Raphael’s School in West Medford graduating in 1970. My political activism really started in my first day as a new freshman student at Medford High School. Entering on my first day, first class, I was seated in my first Civics class, where my teacher Thomas Convery, (a long time Medford resident, historian, teacher, activist) boomed out to this group of cowering freshman in a voice I continue to hear to this day “Do you know what time of year this is?” the group response was fall?. Boy, were we wrong, as he went on to explain, it was election season, and our first quarter grade would be based on one assignment. Pick a Political campaign do an interview of the candidate and volunteer. Well thanks to Tom Convery I have been involved every year since and I want to thank him for opening my eyes to how important involvement is to our political system of government which works best when we all participate.
Since then I have served in many campaign roles from a volunteer holding signs and making phone calls, to a field organizer, a campaign manager, a fundraiser and a Chairman. I am a long time volunteer and supporter of Congressman Ed Markey volunteering and supporting his first campaign dropping Lit for him and I still find myself at a polling place every two years for the congressman. I have been involved in most State Representative and Senate campaigns in the district. I have also been directly involved in statewide officers from Attorney General to Governor, I was the City of Woburn Coordinator for Deval Patrick starting with the Primary and on to the Final Election. With Governor Patrick winning Woburn, the first Democrat to win here in 16 years. I have served in several key roles for democrats in local races for Councilman, Alderman, School Committee and Mayor.
I have also been involved in National Races from President Clintons race in 96, Al Gore in 2000 and in 2002- 2004 volunteering for the Kerry Campaign first walking and knocking in the Summer before the Primary to spending a week in Maine rallying participants for Caucuses in Portland and surrounding communities and then providing Technology and GOTV help in the last 2 months of the final Election in Southern NH. Between my participation in Kerry 04, I stopped to run for State Representative in the 30 Middlesex District. Although unsuccessful the experience was one I would not change for a minute. I won the endorsements of the MFT, MTA, NARAL, Mass Equality, Mass Nurses Association, and the Commonwealth Coalition and a number of other groups. I think this Quote from the Commonwealth Coalition frames my campaign and my purpose in Democratic Politics best;
“Our state needs experienced and committed leaders like Quinn who will put the interests of working families first on Beacon Hill”, “said Joe O’Brien, Political Director of the Coalition, “The Commonwealth Coalition is excited to support a dynamic community leader like Ed Quinn who will continue Carol Donovon’s commitment to supporting public education, improving access to health care and working for real reform on Beacon Hill.” Mr. Quinn is a long time local activist with 30 years of dynamic participation in his community working for and supporting the Democratic issues and common sense platform and values. Mr. Quinn has served and currently serves on several volunteer boards in the city. His election would ensure the communities of Woburn Reading and Stoneham continued effective and vibrant representation in the Legislature. Mr. Quinn is married with 3 children and has lived in Woburn for 24 years.
I am running today because of that concern for working families and the need for a strong organization, which starts with our local committees. For the last 4 years I have worked aggressively to build the Woburn Ward and City Committee I currently Chair the largest active Committee in Woburn and I want to bring this energy and commitment to the State Committee and the Town and City committees with in the entire district. By becoming a partner with all of the committees and support their local efforts to expand participation and membership. We have all seen the results of a strong grass roots organization and how critical it is to Democratic Victories. I want to be a visible State committee representative to assist Democratic Candidates bringing to them the help that the State Committee can provide and assure their success. Equally import I would like to continue to be a spokesman and advocate for the foundation principles of our Democratic Party Platform, which must continue to guarantee;
Freedom and Opportunity in every aspect of Life

I am thrilled to endorse Ed Quinn for the ballot seat on the Democratic State Committee from the Second Middlesex district in the February 5th election.

p>Ed has been my friend and colleague through numerous campaigns, and is exactly the right person for the Democratic State Committee. He has long worked for positive, progressive values as an activist in local government in Woburn, and on State issues. He is relentless in both furthering those values and in working to build a stronger Democratic Party.
<
p>I encourage Democratic voters in the Second Middlesex district to vote for Ed Quinn on Tuesday.
