The editorial also expresses regret over the narrow loss of a 2000 ballot question that would have ended dog racing, saying that “voters in Massachusetts have not yet been dog’s best friend.”
Finally, the editorial highlights comments made a few weeks ago by dog track George Carney, in which he acknowledged his business is no longer viable:
George Carney, owner of Raynham-Taunton racetrack, pleaded with lawmakers at a Statehouse hearing last month to approve slot machines to boost revenue. “We’re going to keep on running,” he said. “But I’m telling you, there’s no money left in the racing. If you want to keep us going, you’ve got to give us the slots.”
We are grateful for the media support we have received so far, and look forward to working with other editorial boards as the election nears.
We are confident that once voters are fully educated about commercial dog racing in Massachusetts, they will vote for the dogs in November.
